Locale: Leeward Ko'olau Range above Moanalua
Access: Request permission from Moanalua Gardens Foundation
Hazards: Numerous narrow spots with steep drop-offs along the Ko'olau summit

Directions to trailhead: (from Honolulu) Take H-1 west. Near Middle St. keep left on Rte 78 west to Aiea. Take the exit marked Moanalua Valley--Red Hill. From the off ramp turn right on Ala Aolani St. heading into Moanalua Valley. Proceed to the end of Ala Aolani and park on the street just before the entrance to Moanalua Valley Park.

Hike directions: Continue on foot through Moanalua Valley Park, along a dirt/gravel road in back of the parking lot and around a locked gate. Travel approximately three miles into the valley accomplishing numerous stream
crossings until you reach the end of the road. Bear left onto a trail (a short distance to the right is a vehicle turnaround area).

Hike description: Pu'u Keahi a Kahoe (literally, "Kahoe's fire") is the mist-shrouded peak at the back of Moanalua Valley. Magnificent views and rare native plants along the summit and middle ridge are the reward for
doing this wild "wow" hike.
