Jul 4 Sun 'AIEA RIDGE Trail Maintenance
Jul 4 Sun 8AM KULEPEAMOA RIDGE
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley)
This hike has everything that makes hiking in Hawai'i so special:
a hot scramble up a steep slope; a steady climb along an open,
windswept ridge; a narrow summit stretch with awesome views;
a tree hugging descent down a slippery ridge; a quiet walk through
a lovely valley. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay
Feldman, ph 262-9596.
Jul 11 Sun MANANA Trail Maintenance
Jul 11 Sun 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT
(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)
Have you ever wanted to walk on the legendary Ko'olau Summit
Trail? If so, here's your chance. The route leads to a secluded
windward overlook near the old Kahuku Trail junction. You may
be able to hike farther along the summit ridge toward Malaekahana.
Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.
Jul 17 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY LULUMAHU
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Nu'uanu)
You start out on a grassy jeep road; leaping over a concrete
culvert gushing with water; passing an area littered with colorful,
flowery impatiens; carefully making your way across a little
concrete moss-laden dam; zigzagging over the same stream several
times, with the ever-present wind nipping at your heels; scrambling
up, over, and around large, downed-tree trunks; and as you get
closer, you will be welcomed by a lovely cascading waterfall
nestled deep in Nu'uanu Valley. Coordinators Miles & Maureen
Brubacher, ph 261-7814.
Jul 17 Sat 3PM PAU HIKE BARBECUE AT
THE CLUBHOUSE
After a workout on the hike, chill out at the clubhouse, take
a swim and talk story under the hau arbor. Bring something to
throw on the coals and also a salad to share with the other weary
trekkers. If anyone has some slides they want to share, bring
them along. See ya there.
Jul 18 Sun KA'AU CRATER Trail Maintenance
Jul 18 Sun 8AM 'AIEA RIDGE
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/'Aiea)
We start easy on the loop trail then trek the long and rugged
ridge to the Ko'olau summit (2800'). Be careful as one president,
who will remain nameless, once slipped and fell a good distance
but still lived to hike again. Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.
Jul 24 Sat 8AM WAIMALU SUMMIT SUPER
HIKE RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15; PARTICIPANTS
SCREENED AND APPROVED BY THE HIKE COORDINATORS
(15 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waimalu)
Beyond Mr. Robinson's neighborhood is the superb middle ridge
of Waimalu Valley featuring a spectacular final ascent to the
very broad summit. From the summit we will traverse the Ko'olau
Summit Ridge and close the loop returning to evilization via
a spur of recently completed Waiau. Reserve your spot early.
Coordinators Dayle Turner and Patrick Rorie, ph 247-2656.
Jul 25 Sun 8AM MANANA
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)
Manana is, perhaps, the best ungraded ridge hike in the Ko'olau
Range. The route follows a paved road and then a wide path through
regenerating native dryland forest. After the helipad, the vegetation
closes in, and the trail becomes rough and muddy. The last mile
along the now open, windswept ridge is out of this world. Coordinator
Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.
Jul 30 Fri - Aug 1 Sun KO'OLAU SUMMIT
BACKPACK
(MEMBERS ONLY, RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, LIMIT OF 10)
(20 Mi/Masochist/Ridge/Ko'olau)
We did this backpack 5 years ago and none of the participants
made it! We'll try for better luck this year and take advantage
of the hard work the trail maintenance crew has done clearing
the guava by starting from Pupukea with overnights at Kawailoa
and Poamoho. Because of access probelms and overgrowth we'll
bail down Schofield-Waikane. Coordinators Dayle Turner and Patrick
Rorie, ph 676-2748.
Jul 31 Sat 8AM KALAUAO
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/'Aiea)
We descend to a lovely valley off the loop trail. Expect native
flora, mountain apples, and a hearty climb back up to the loop.
Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.
Aug 1 Sun TRIPLER Trail Maintenance
Aug 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KA'AU CRATER
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo)
You'll be hiking through a lush, green profusion of foliage brushing
against your cheeks, the scent of ginger blossoms wafting in
the air, splashing your way through several stream crossings,
scaling past three in-your-face waterfalls with knotted cables
used as hand holds, and at the approach a huge, water-filled
crater nestled against the Ko'olau summit. You can make this
into a loop trail returning by way of another route. Coordinator
John Hoover, ph 528-1206.
Aug 7 Sat (Special Meeting Time) MEMBERS
ONLY KEAHI A KAHOE IKI
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Ridge/Kahekili)
Call the coordinator for the meeting time and place for this
return to an old favorite featuring sheer drop-offs and spectacular
views. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.
Aug 8 Sun KAHEKILI Trail Maintenance
Aug 8 Sun 8AM MA'AKUA GULCH
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hau'ula)
The lush green valley lures you in, but gradually turns into
a slot canyon with vertical walls only a few yards apart and
ends at a small waterfall and pool. The hike is beautiful, but
use caution when negotiating the slippery rocks at the numerous
stream crossings. Limu tabis or other appropriate footwear are
required. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.
Aug 14 Sat 8AM SAND
DUNE SHUFFLE
(7 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Kahuku)
Explore this pristine coastal environment along Kahuku's north
shore. Visit and see gorgeous beaches, tsunami created sand dunes,
coral shelves, tidepools, and turquoise blue ocean. Bring light
sneakers, sunscreen and a lunch. Coordinators Larry Oswald and
Kris Corliss, ph 638-7268.
Aug 14 Sat 7:30PM Clubhouse ROUTEBURN,
KEPLER, MILFORD, WHERE ARE WE?, a slide show by Grant Oka
and Joyce Tomlinson
Of course, we are in New Zealand, where we are called trekkers
and we go on tracks. Catch a few views of Routeburn and Milford,
but most scenes will be of the Kepler, the newest major track
in Fjordland National Park. It has great variety starting on
the shores of TeAnau, tropical forests, and ridges with spectacular
scenery. Bring a treat or pay $1 at the door.
Aug 15 Sun KUOLANI-WAIANU Trail Maintenance
Aug 15 Sun 8AM TRIPLER
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)
This long, ungraded hike follows the up-down-up ridge between
Moanalua and Kamanaiki Valleys. If the sun shines, enjoy the
superb view from the Ko'olau summit, If the rain falls, look
for waterfalls in the side gulches. Coordinators Judy & Kim
Roy, ph 988-5372.
Aug 22 Sun KAHANA VALLEY Trail Maintenance
Aug 22 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAHEKILI
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka'a'awa)
To get to this beautiful, lush, green, hidden valley laden with
several little waterfalls you must first climb the craggy peaks,
being careful of the loose rocks that go hurtling down far below
the steep sides, sidle across narrow dikes with sheer drop offs,
scale boulders that block your path with a budda-like presence,
and all the while catching your breath when taking in the melodramatic
views of the windward coastline. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph
422-1048.
Aug 28 Sat 8AM WA'AHILA-KOLOWALU
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis)
We'll hike the ridgetop starting from the park above St. Louis
Heights, marveling at the views of Manoa and Palolo Valleys and
then connect down to Manoa Valley by a precipitous trail. Coordinator
Zon Owen, ph 597-8493.
Aug 29 Sun HALAWA RIDGE Trail Maintenance
Aug 29 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)
This intricate loop hike meanders around a lush windward valley.
Along the stream are inviting pools and ono mountain apples.
Watch out, however, for the notorious Kahana mosquitoes and mud
hole. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.
Sep 5 Sun KONAHUANUI Trail Maintenance
Sep 5 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)
Deep in Waiahole Valley is this unique trail. A ditch trail following
the contour of the Ko'olau mountain. A cobble stone path leads
us to a beautiful forest with giant bird's-nest ferns. We cross
the top of a waterfall and continue to a water tunnel. A loop
trail with a variety of vegetation. Coordinator Steve Brown,
ph 836-4940.
Sep 11 Sat 8AM KOLOA KAI
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)
A great Saturday hike starting on a ridge with a fabulous view
of the La'ie coastline. A gradual descent into Koloa Gulch to
the stream Trail. We continue downstream to the old ditch system
and loop back to the start of this trail. Coordinator Steve Poor,
ph 638-8387.
Sep 12 Sun SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE Trail
Maintenance
Sep 12 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE
(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)
Ignore H-3, this trail is so much nicer that the highway is odious.
Although this significant connector to the summit is a contour
trail for most of its length without the ups and downs of some
ridgetop trails, completing it is still an accomplishment of
which you can be proud. Coordinators Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596
and Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.
Sep 19 Sun WAI'ANAE-KA'ALA Trail Maintenance
Sep 19 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Manoa)
The double humps are the highest points on the Ko'olau range
and your lungs and legs will attest to that fact. More often
than not, Konahuanui is shrouded in clouds. Coordinator Arnold
Fujioka, ph 625-9431.
Sep 25 Sat 8AM MAUNAWILI LOOP
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Foothill/Maunawili)
From the new to the old, from the familiar to the strange, we
will ramble around the base of Maunawili. We'll stop at the falls,
hit a connector trail, check out Ko'olaupoko Trail and then try
to find our cars. Coordinator Joyce Tomlinson, ph 674-1459.
Sep 25 Sat 6PM Clubhouse APPRECIATION
NIGHT
The hike coordinators, trail maintenance crew, committee members
and board members contribute significantly to the on-going life
of the Club. It's payback time with free dinner and socializing.
Get involved and you too may be rewarded with free pizza! Attendance
by invitation only.
Sep 26 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)
The trail is 9 miles but the road tacks on another 3. Expect
native plants on this beautiful but rugged trail thru the Ko'olau
high country. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.
Oct 2 Sat 8AM TANTALUS RAMBLE
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)
Ramble with us in the Tantalus area over trails familiar and
some not so. Follow the coordinator's instructions to avoid unpleasant
and embarrassing situations (getting lost). Coordinator Phil
Booth, ph 627-1693.
Oct 3 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI'ANAE-KA'ALA
(5 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai'anae)
The climate changes from dry Waianae to cool and wet Ka'ala as
we ascend to the highest point on Oahu. This is a short but very
steep climb to the Ka'ala bog. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691. |
