The Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club
Schedule of Hikes and Events for April - May - June, 1998

A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 a.m. unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, please call the leader for meeting place and time. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

Transportation is not provided!! However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. Hikers are responsible for themselves at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes

Many HTMC hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map.

Firearms, pets, radios, and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

Good Friday's the best day to do this pilgrimage to plumage as we view the baby booby birds. Wear a hat as protection from the dive bombing parents. Coordinator Donna Davis-Brown, ph 422-7830.

(10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)

The first trek takes us into the historic Damon family summer estate. The cobble-stone road crosses turn of the century hand-built bridges and a famous petroglyph rock. Finally, into the valley with its numerous stream crossings, hau tree tangles and steep final ascent that brings us to a windswept panoramic view of Haiku Valley, H-3, and Kane'ohe Bay. "...like a pendulum do, bobbies on bicycles two by two...". View London at the time of Princess Diana's death. On to Bath, Chester, a hike in the Lake Country and walks in the old walled city of York. Bring crumpets or pay $1 at the door.

A sultry hike in the beginning climbing her numerous undulating steep hills and scanty ledges and then dank and dripping at the end walking through her moss-laden bog at the often shrouded summit. If you're lucky she may give (views!). Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuli'ou'ou)

An interesting hike with a combination of valley, ridge and crossing the summit trail from Pu'u O Kona to the Kuli`ou`ou state trail. A steep climb to the right ridge of Kuli'ouou, dropping down into Ka'alakei valley with another uphill grind on Haha'ione ridge to the summit. The summit trail requires caution on the eroded section of the trail. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

From Manoa Cliff Trail to Pauoa Flats to Nu'uanu Trail and along Pauoa ridgeline down to the pipeline. Then along a contour trail back up the valley until we climb up through a dense ti forest and back to the trailhead. Definitely a hike of varied terrain and sore muscles. May 3 Sun 8AM 'AIEA RIDGE

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/'Aiea)

A rewarding hike with lots of beautiful views. The hike starts on the 'Aiea Loop Trail to warm up your muscles. As you hike along the ridge, the trail gets very narrow as you approach the summit. The view from the summit is awesome. Please use extreme caution as people (certain presidents who will remain anonymous) have fallen off this trail. Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.

This full-moon hike is so beautiful, people have been known to become engaged, in one way or another! Bring flashlights, as there are steep drop-offs in places. Meet at Kailua Beach Park opposite Buzz's Steak House. Coordinators Miles & Maureen Brubacher, ph 261-7814.

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu)

Some forest trail hiking, some dirt-road strolling will make this pleasant Ko'olau foothills jaunt appeal to the pedestrian in us all. Mind the ribbons and 'ware the junctions to forestall embarrassing loss of satisfactory closure (returning safely back to the trailhead). Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.

May 16 Sat 7:30 PM Clubhouse "Paddling Spitsbergen", a slide show by guest Mark Rognstad

A true last frontier, Spitsbergen is part of a group of islands in the Arctic Ocean, North of Norway. Brrrrr. And our guide does it paddling an inflatable kayak. In this ten day trip, he explored a fjord and saw a lot of wildlife including reindeer. Finding a dry camp site on shore was a challenge. Come hear how he did it. Bring a goodie or pay $1 at the door.

It's a tedious 11-miler ungraded ridge hike past windswept slopes, steep narrow drop-offs, hazarding her meandering trail life life's many ups and downs. But at the summit you can have your cake and eat it too while sitting at a picnic table amidst astounding views of the leeward and windward coasts! Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.

Prolonged stretches of her sweltering, never-ending road; then yielding to the boughs of her verdant stands of strawberry guavas and iron woods; and finally climaxing with a long, cool dip in her waterhole down at the stream. Coordinators Carole Moon, ph 596-4864 and Charlotte Yamane, ph 235-1748.

The whole is more than the sum of its parts - thus is the case with this combo hike including ridge and valley rambling for a bit of a work-out, good views and interesting vegetation. Coordinator Joyce Tomlinson, ph 674-1459.

Come one, come all to the bigtop in East O'ahu! It's a brand new show brought to you by Ringling Bros, Leao and Denison. Featuring: a rare appearance by the ferocious Hawaii Kai Cougar, aaand a death-defying tightrope walk along the Ko'olau Summit, aaand freaks of nature, like a wild guava with strawberries growing on it!!! Saturday June 6 is National Trails Day

Join the volunteers from HTMC and our sister organizations who have helped Na Ala Hele build trails over the years. As well as benefiting the trail, this is an opportunity to learn some trail building techniques and socialize with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Speaking of socializing, the second part of the event is:

A very interesting hike with a lot of trails going everywhere, follow the ribbons and you won't go wrong. Pay close attention on your way in and watch for landmarks. A much easier route with less steep ups and downs makes this an enjoyable hike. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 836-4940.

This hike starts out steep as it takes us above Sacred Falls on a side ridge. From there we head towards the summit. Our goal is the junction with the famed Castle Trail. If the weather is good and the trail clearers have been ambitious, we may push on to the summit. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Join Paka-Lolo and the Ko'olau Teddy Bear for a rollercoaster hike, a sprint across the rugged Ko'olau Summit, and a jog down a graded trail where the miles fly by. Coordinators Dayle Turner and Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Bring your newest equipment and lets talk gear for hiking, camping, and backpacking. We'll review the features of new materials and products. Get acquainted with resources, too, as catalogs and magazines are invited. Bring your own picnic to enjoy under the arbor later. We will have hot coals if you want to barbecue. We'll salute the last day of spring as the sun sets.

(3 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Hanauma)

Watch the waves and the wake of the whales' tails crashing on this rocky scramble at the edge of the ocean. The views are great, the sun is hot (sunscreen recommended) and the route is subject to change due to restrictions for approaching Hanauma Bay. Coordinator Donna Davis-Brown, ph 422-7830.

For 3 years running we have ended this hike at the saddle below Pu'u 'Ohulehule. Now it's time fo try for the top of this alluring peak. Bring your sure feet, sturdy arms and your clear head. Don't forget the anti-acrophobial pills. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

The Board of Water Supply offers this tour of their hole in the hill which leads a short distance to a water bearing rock face. Beyond is the trek to heavenly Hamama Falls. Coordinator Zon Owen, ph 597-8493.

This is a good way to experience a portion of the Ko'olau Summit Trail. The turnaround is a nice lookout at the Kahuku Trail junction. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.
