A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 a.m. unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, please call the leader for meeting place and time. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.
Transportation is not provided!! However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.
Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. Hikers are responsible for themselves at all times.
Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes
Many HTMC hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map.
Firearms, pets, radios, and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

Jul 6 Sun ‘AIEA RIDGE Trail MaintenanceJul 6 Sun 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT (9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea) Have you ever wanted to walk the legendary Ko’olau Summit Trail? If so, here’s your chance. The trail leads a short way to an open, windy overlook of Kahuku and La’ie. The hike ends at a small secluded lookout near the old Kahuku Trail. Jul 19 Sat 9AM WA’AHILA-KOLOWALU (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis) A rare hike that starts at the top and goes down the trail and no need to climb back up. Jul 19 Sat 7:30PM Clubhouse, "Just Japan", slide show by Joyce Tomlinson. Come to the clubhouse early to enjoy the surf and the sand. Also, we’d like to heat up the olde smoker and cook some chickens for a picnic. If you’d like to smoke a "cock" or a "chick", let us know. Bring your own side dishes. We’ll eat at "fiveish". The slide show will be at 7:30 and will feature a collage of places Joyce visited in her recent trips to Japan. For the slide show, bring sushi or senbei or pay $1 at the door.

Jul 27 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuli’ou’ou) This hike promises to get your heart rate up as we cross over a ridge and descend into a valley. Then a lung busting climb to the summit where we traverse dizzying heights to Pu’u O Kona at the back of Kuli’ou’ou Valley. Use caution in the hazardous areas and be wary of the steep drop-offs. Aug 2 Sat 9AM ULUPAINA (4 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Ridge/Kahalu’u) A loop trail starting on an easy contour trail and by the time you reach the end of this trail you will be ready for the steep climb to the top of the ridge. Aug 3 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Manoa) True HTMers expect a challenge each Sunday so we’ll start this hike from the back of Manoa Valley. Our goal is the twin peaks of the highest mountain in the Ko’olau Range. Usually, Konahuanui chooses to hide its strong masculine profile in a shroud of mist. Aug 10 Sun 8AM MANANA (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades) Hobnobbing among the Knobs and Humps of Manana, rubbing elbows with the Apapanes, the Koas, the Naupakas, and socializing with the light haired, the dark haired and the silver manes this trail appeals to all. Aug 16 Sat 9AM KALAUAO (5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/’Aiea) A loop trail starting on the ‘Aiea Loop Trail. We will descend into the valley via a ridge with great views. We will hike downstream to a waterfall and a great swimming hole. After lunch and a dip we will continue downstream. Be prepared for a steep climb back to the ‘Aiea Loop Trail. Aug 16 Sat 7:30PM Clubhouse, "Austrian and Italian Alps" slide show by Walter Tokushige. Hiking two trails in Europe, we’ll first see the thundering Krimml Waterfalls and go on the Pasterze Glacier in Austria. Crossing over to Italy, we’ll see Lake Misurina, Val Gardena, and the Pyramids of Segonzano, plus areas of the famous Dolomite Range. The sharp pointed peaks of the Dolomites provide some of the most majestic mountain scenery in the world. Bring pretzels or pasta or pay $1 at the door.

Sep 14 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U KEAHI A KAHOE (11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua) This high pointed peak in the Ko’olau Range is festooned with powerlines, abandoned radars and even has a stairway to the top! Don't be fooled, Pu’u K. remains a wild and woolly place. The misty tradewinds mingling with the stunted native forest create an eerie, unforgettable hiking experience. Sep 20 Sat 7:30PM Clubhouse, "Hawaiian Rare Plant Recovery Project", slide show by Randy Kennedy. This project is a combined effort of State and Federal agencies to gather seeds, store them, and to rescue and propagate rare native plants. On several islands in Hawai’i there are arboretums and "exclosures" where plants are grown. On O’ahu, the old Nike site out Mokule’ia way is used. Randy will share what the project is all about. Bring native fruits to eat or pay $1 at the door.

He will teach us Basic First Aid and CPR too. Class size is limited. You must reserve a place with Joyce Tomlinson at 674-1459 by Sept 15. Priority will be given to hike coordinators. Cost will be a minimal $15, perhaps more for a text.

Sep 28 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KA’AU CRATER (6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo) Nestled against the Ko’olau Mountains is Palolo’s Ka’au Crater. Getting there requires a valley hike, then a thrilling climb up a slippery waterfall. We circumnavigate the crater by climbing the steep east ridge, crossing the Ko’olau Summit, the descending the west ridge. Hazards: steep drop-offs. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.
Oct 5 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH (7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie) A diverse trail that starts up a ridge then drops down to Koloa Stream. After navigating numerous stream crossings, we arrive at our lunch spot. A gorgeous waterfall beckons you to cool off and frolic in her plunge pool.
