Jul 4 Sat – No hike – See Tues Jul 7

Jul 5 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE

(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)

This wonderful old CCC trail begins steeply, but then contours comfortably all the way to the Ko’olau Summit. It's a long trek, but turning around is always an option.  The parallel H-3 freeway eventually begins to sound like a distant river.

Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Jul 7 Tue 6PM KA’IWA RIDGE

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 6PM across from Buzz’s Steak House in Kailua

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)

Ascend Ka’iwa Ridge to the WWII bunkers as the sun sets in the west, then await the moonrise in the east.  Bring a soft cushion and refreshments to add to the gaiety of this lunar celebration.  A good flashlight is needed for the descent as there are numerous steep sections and dropoffs (i.e. cliffs!). Coordinator Sandra Klein, ph 263-8330.

Jul 11 Sat 8AM KALAUAO

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Aiea)

We descend to a lovely valley with a small waterfall and pool off the Aiea Loop trail.  Expect native flora, mountain apples, and a steep climb back up to the loop trail. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

Jul 12 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KA’AU CRATER

No Meeting @ Palace

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo)

Expect lush vegetation, a swimming hole, waterfalls, a fascinating crater, and a superb open ridge walk along the Ko’olau summit, featuring outstanding views of Honolulu and Windward O’ahu. Use extra caution on the steep, badly eroded east rim. Coordinator Steve Davis, Steve_Davis@ymail.com (preferred) or 371-1492.

Jul 19 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY CASTLE

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 50

Reservations accepted beginning 8AM, July 6

No Meeting @ Palace

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge-Contour/Punalu’u)

Built in 1906, this graded trail switchbacks up the side of Punalu’u Valley to Kaluanui Stream well above Sacred Falls. Those continuing beyond the stream will pass a lovely waterfall on the way to the misty Ko’olau Summit. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jul 25 Sat 8AM KAWA’EWA’E

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane’ohe)

We start in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Kane’ohe with an easy hillside stroll, but the route quickly moves beyond the “Novice” category. Parts of this trail may soon fall victim to a planned cemetery expansion. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Jul 26 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKAPUU TOM-TOM

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at the Clubhouse

(4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu’u)

Don’t let the short mileage of this hike fool you…every strenuous foot of it seems to be either straight up or straight down. The consolation is that every foot of it has a fabulous panoramic view. You can relax & recover at the clubhouse afterward. Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Aug 1 Sat 5PM CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDESHOW

(Potluck @ 5PM) Join your hiking friends for a potluck. The famous Kalapana black sand beach and town of Kalapana on the Big Island was wiped out by lava flows. Vanessa Cole will present a short slideshow exploring the Kalapana area today and a history of the lava flows in the area. Please bring a potluck dish to share or contribute $7.  We will be providing BBQ.  RSVP via Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay normal clubhouse fee to attend.

Aug 2 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)

Hike this circuitous route through lush jungle, crossing streams and tramping muddy trails.  A nice lunch spot next to a cool swimming hole beckons all to sit and socialize for a while.  Be aware of the numerous side trails and pay attention to the ribbons marking today’s route. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Aug 8 Sat 8AM ULUPAINA

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Ridge/Kahaluu)

This trail, pioneered by the legendary Dick Davis, begins from the pet cemetery section of Valley of the Temples Memorial Park, and leads to the trail's terminus at a large power line tower at the top of the third puu. It's a short loop hike in the foothills above Kane’ohe, which includes a ridge and a valley contour section. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 263-8330.

Aug 9 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KULEPEAMOA RIDGE

No Meeting @ Palace – Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley)

Stroll through a quiet valley; stride up a windy ridge; scramble along a narrow summit; slide down a slippery staircase; slalom past guava gates. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Aug 16 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie)

This is a ridge and a stream hike with 25 crossings over slippery rocks and occasional rock fall. At the junction take the right fork to the waterfall, where a wet plunge will feel great after the long hike. Look for o’opu, hihiwai, and prawns in pools along the trail, and maybe the mountain apples will be ripe for the picking. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Aug 22 Sat 8AM TANTALUS RAMBLE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

This hike, first surveyed by the senior Booth, is found less than an hour away from Honolulu. It is a series of paths that meander all over Tantalus, all interconnected through a myriad of trails. Pay close attention to the trail ribbons and the trail leader's instructions, or you'll end up spending the night on the mountain viewing the city lights. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Aug 23 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U MANAMANA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Swanzy Beach parking lot

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kaaawa)

This is the scary big dog on the schedule! It’s steep & strenuous, with crumbly rock, razor thin ridges, and sheer drop offs. The views are eye-popping, but don’t take your eyes off your feet! And don’t be embarrassed to use hands & knees. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Aug 30 Sun 8AM WAIMALU DITCH

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Waimalu)

Our route follows an abandoned plantation ditch into a lush valley. Cross the stream seven times to reach an idyllic lunch spot and swimming hole. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Sep 6 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAWAINUI

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet at Haleiwa Beach Park on Kam Hwy

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hale’iwa)

It’s been 15 years since we’ve been able to hike this beautiful steam trail, ending at the largest freshwater pool on O’ahu. Use caution along the narrow sections with steep dropoffs to the stream below. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Sep 12 Sat 8AM ‘AHUIMANU

(2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahalu’u)

Wander in the woods to the base of the pali near Temple Valley.  Seek and find signs of ancient Hawai’i as you pass over old rock walls.  Beware the tree monster! The trail winds back to a spring coming out of a rock wall and falling into a mossy pool.  Bring mosquito repellant! Coordinator Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

Sep 13 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KALENA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Kemoo Farm Parking Lot

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield)

This significant hike to the second highest point on O’ahu is challenging (steep) and rewarding (great views, sense of accomplishment). Extra caution is required while negotiating the narrow dike formations. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

Sep 20 Sun 8AM ’AIEA RIDGE

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/’Aiea)

We start on the novice Aiea loop trail, but then branch off onto a long rigorous ridge trail, which undulates its way, seemingly forever, to the Koolau Summit. Good luck if you make it that far! Turning back early is always an option. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Sep 26 Sat 8AM LUA’ALAEA

(2 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)

A pleasant little waterfall to the right of Manoa Falls is our destination as we skirt the flumes, the mule’s foot ferns, and other interesting tropical foliage. Be prepared for mud and mosquitos. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Sep 27 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina)

This combination valley-ridge-summit hike circles around the back of ‘Aina Haina. Be prepared for serious ups and downs and watch for several crucial left turns. Coordinator Jay Feldman, ph 234-9069.

Oct 4 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

This mixed plate hike rambles through various terrains & vegetation zones in the Tantalus area. Some sections are level & wide, others are steep & narrow. Experience native forest, bamboo groves, and guava thickets. Watch for ancient rock walls, and critical junctions. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.
