Jul 6 Sun 8AM 'ILIAHI RIDGE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

This pleasant loop off the Manana Trail has several ups and downs for a good workout. Expect a new variation which may increase the length a bit, but not the difficulty. Don't miss the key junctions, or you could end up walking much farther than you bargained for. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Jul 12 Sat 8AM 'AHUIMANU

(2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahalu'u)

A walk through the woods close to the houses provides a pleasant tour including old rock wall terraces and a small waterfall and pool. Be prepared for a myriad of mosquitoes and slippery stream crossings. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.

Jul 13 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet on Manoa Rd. just before it narrows at the intersection with Wa'akaua St

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Manoa)

Experienced mountain climbers can make their annual pilgrimage to the "big boy", the tallest peak in the Ko'olau Range. The short and straight forward (up?) route uses remnants of an old Hawaiian trail and the Castle-Olympus Trail built in 1911. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

July 19 Sat 6PM KA'IWA RIDGE

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 6PM across from Buzz’s Steak House in Kailua

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)

As the sun sets on a late summer day, come join us on a moon rise hike to a short, steep, windswept ridge behind Lanikai, ending at the WWII military bunkers. Enjoy the incredible 360 degree panoramic views of windward O'ahu at the top.  The route requires some careful footing due to loose rocks and steepness. Flashlights and wind jackets are necessary. Coordinator Carole Moon, ph 387-0044.

Jul 20 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)

We'll meander around this magnificent windward valley tracing an intricate, sometimes confusing figure eight loop, with multiple stream crossings. Watch for several key junctions, or you could end up in the middle of nowhere. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Fri Jul 25 thru Sun Jul 27 KO'OLAU SUMMIT TRAIL BACKPACK

Reservations Required – Participants approved by the Coordinator

(18 Mi/Advanced/Ridge)

It's been many years since we last backpacked this historic route. We will start from Laie on Friday and camp at either Kawailoa or Kahuku that evening. On the 2nd evening, we’ll try for Poamoho. Enjoy the awesome windward vistas the 3rd and final day en route to and down Waikane. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

Jul 26 Sat 8AM LUA'ALAEA

(2 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)

Our route to this little-known waterfall to the right of Manoa Falls requires dealing with mud, mosquitoes, and slippery stream crossings. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

Jul 27 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KALENA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Kemoo Farm Parking Lot

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield)

Although short, Kalena is a bona fide advanced hike, as serious climbing starts right away. After scampering (crawling?) across several narrow rock dikes, you can relax awhile before tackling the final ascent to O'ahu's second highest peak. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Aug 3 Sun 8:30AM WAI'ANAE KAI

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet at Wai'anae First Hawaiian Bank parking lot

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wai'anae)

Two hikes in one. Members will be given the option of climbing Tiki Ridge which runs parallel to the normal route. There are 3 rock faces on this advanced ridge. There are a number of place to get lost so be sure follow directions and do not hike alone. FRS radios tuned to 7-14 would make the coordinator very HAPPY. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Aug 9 Sat 8AM KAWA'EWA'E

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane'ohe)

Starting with an easy hillside stroll in Friendship Gardens, our route changes to scrambling up and down steep slopes and along narrow ledges, and provides good views of Kane'ohe Bay and vicinity. The last leg of this hike may be lost if the cemetery expansion plans are realized. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Aug 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY – LANIHULI

No Meeting @ Palace – Call coordinator for rendezvous.

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kapalama)

A steady upward hike on an “honest” trail for the most part until the steep descent to the infamous saddle then the final ascent to the Ko'olau Summit on a somewhat spiny ridge. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

Aug 17 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA'U GULCH

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hau'ula)

The route is long, and the reward is great. Be prepared for countless stream crossings, which can be even more treacherous if the rocks are slippery or your energy level is low. But the waterfall and pool may just be worth it. Coordinator Karen Liliker, ph 349-8336.

Aug 23 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City)

This pleasant family loop hike with only modest ups and downs provides spectacular views of the Wai'anae and Ko'olau crests from upper Waimano Valley.  There are many trail intersections, so you should plan to stay with the group. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Aug 24 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U O KONA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ the end of Kalaau Place

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuli'ou'ou)

Not the tame "State trail", but a "Walk on the Wild Side"!  This long loop climbs steeply to the summit, crosses a precipitous ridge, and plunges back into the valley!  Watch your footing, but glance up occasionally for great views. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Aug 31 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)

While your boots stay dry for the initial ridge portion, once we get down to Koloa stream, it’s wet feet time.  You’ll lose count of the number of times the trail crosses the stream. Upstream travel ends at a nice waterfall for your lunchtime enjoyment. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Sep 7 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE

(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)

After an initial steep climb, we’ll access the CCC contour trail which leads leisurely (and lengthily) to the Ko'olau Summit, overlooking Kane'ohe and Ha'ikü.  Ignore the sounds of H-3, or pretend it's a wild river cascading alongside the trail. Coordinator Kevin English, ph 271-5125.

Sep 13 Sat 8AM POAMOHO

Reservations Required – Limited # of Hikers – No meeting @ Palace

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Wahiawa)

Join us on this lovely trail to the Ko'olau crest. Call the coordinator as early as possible if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, since these are required, and the number available will determine how many hikers can participate.  Enjoy and protect the native plants and their habitat. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Sep 14 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KA'AU CRATER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo)

Our journey to this seldom-seen crater requires negotiating slippery stream crossings, knife edge ridges, and nearly vertical waterfall faces. Lush tropical forests and spectacular views are your reward. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Sept 21 Sun 8AM LA'IE

(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La'ie)

Endure some initial road walking, before eventually joining a verdant contour trail which meanders peacefully all the way to the summit.  It's a long journey, but half way up is a waterfall pool, offering us a cool dip. Coordinators Kris Corliss & Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Sep 27 Sat 8AM TANTALUS RAMBLE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

Ramble with us in the Tantalus area over trails familiar and some not so. Be prepared for scrambling up and down some that are less user-friendly than usual. Follow the coordinator’s instructions to insure a safe return. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Sep 28 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U MANAMANA

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Swanzy Beach parking lot

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka'a'awa)

Short, Steep, Scary and oh so Satisfying.  The trail that gets you close to Pu'u Manamana, is all that and more.  Definitely an advanced hike where legs, lungs and good balance are needed for maximum enjoyment. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Oct 5 Sun 8AM WAIAU

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau)

Enjoy a graded trail at first, then the terrain becomes more and more strenuous and overgrown.  Only strong and determined hikers can expect to summit and still get out before dark.  Stop and turn around when you’ve had enough. Coordinators Grant & Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.
