Apr 13 Sun 8AM KEALIA

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokuleia)

This contoured switchback trail takes you gradually and pleasantly to the top of the ridge above Dillingham Airfield.  From there, it's anyone's guess where the coordinator will lead you, on the maze of dirt roads.  Be prepared for a cardiovascular workout, and GREAT views. Bring that camera! Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

Apr 19 Sat 8AM AIEA BISECTUAL

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Aiea)

This rarely used woodsy ramble connects the upper and lower sections of the Aiea Loop Trail.  The trail is generally easy, with not too much up & down, but caution should be used on any hike. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Apr 20 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY DUPONT

No Meeting @ Palace

(10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waialua)

Note – All hikers will be assessed $1.00 to cover the permit fee required for this hike. This heart thumping trail takes you VERY STEEPLY to the highest point on Oahu.  Be prepared for thorny blackberry patches, narrow dike sections, and sheer rock faces. You may or may not have a fabulous view at the top, if the clouds cooperate...but don't count on it.  Expect a long day. Coordinators Kris Corliss & Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Apr 27 Sun 8AM MANANA

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

Manana is, perhaps, the best ungraded ridge hike in the Koolau Range. The route follows a paved road, then a wide path through regenerating native dryland forest. After the helipad, the vegetation closes in, and the trail becomes rough and muddy. The last mile on the open, windswept ridge is out of this world. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 263-8330.

May 3 Sat 8AM KAMANAIKI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Kalihi)

Lace up your boots and follow the green concrete steps up to the ungraded ridgeline trail.  Use caution along the narrow, rooty, windswept sections.  From the clearing at the designated end, there are good views of Kalihi Valley on your left and Kamanaiki Valley on your right.  This will not be a hike to the Koolau summit. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

May 4 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi)

Challenge yourself hiking this very long and difficult ungraded ridge trail to the Koolau summit. You will roller coaster from one ridge to the next on this unending, undulating trail.  As you wind down at the end of the hike near Kalihi Valley, keep a sharp eye out for the rarely seen wallabies, once known to frequent the area .Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 342-0617.

May 10 Sat 5PM CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / EQUIPMENT SWAP MEET

(Potluck @ 5PM) Join your hiking friends for a potluck/cookout at our Waimanalo clubhouse. We will also host an equipment swap meet and demonstrations.  If you have extra gear you no longer use, bring it down to the swap meet and offer good deals to your fellow members. If you've found some cool equipment or food for the trails, present a demo to others.  Let the entertainment committee know what you'd like to demo. Bring a potluck dish to share.  RSVP is HIGHLY recommended.  Please note that this event may be cancelled due to clubhouse renovations, please RSVP to be informed of any cancellations.  Email (preferred) HTMCEntertainment@yahoo.com or call Bev at 384-5100. Non-members pay $2 to attend.

May 11 Sun 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)

After a long approach on a dirt road, this wet, wild and muddy trail winds thru thick guava, then continues on the northernmost portion of the Koolau Summit Trail with both leeward and windward views along the way. We stop and turn around with enough time to make it back to the trailhead well before dark. Coordinators Grant & Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

May 17 Sat 8AM ULUPAINA

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Ridge/Kahaluu)

The first leg of this trail is an easy contour with lovely views of the windward side.  Then there is a steady climb, not steep enough to need ropes, to our lunch spot near the power poles.  The last leg takes us up and down on a ridge, avoiding the tree with bees, and dropping down to the starting point of this loop hike. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

May 18 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY GODEK-JASKULSKI RIDGE

(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

Hike in the footsteps of a couple of the Club's legends, on their namesake trail, which follows the ridge above Moanalua Valley, then returns to the valley floor's picturesque dirt road.  Portions of the trail are steep, and some sections have very narrow dikes (acrophobes be forewarned). Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

May 25 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/WaiAhole)

This lush, tropical loop crosses Waianu stream, and includes a ditch trail with giant bird’s-nest ferns along the way. A few ups and downs, slippery stream crossings, mud and rocks, and narrow trail portions require a hiker’s attention and caution. Bug repellant is highly recommended. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Jun 1 Sun 8:30AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Kemoo Farm Parking Lot

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at Waianae Steve’s

(8 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae)

Note – All hikers will be assessed $1.00 to cover the permit fee required for this hike. This hike is a steep climb up to the highest point on Oahu where the scenic rewards are very dependent on the weather.  The native plants residing in the Kaala bog at the summit love the cool, moist climate.  Expect a steep and muddy trail that requires extreme caution on many sections. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Jun 15 Sun 8AM AIEA RIDGE

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Aiea)

Explore this easily accessible, ungraded ridge hike to the Koolau summit with a lengthy series of ups and downs and the cacophony of the H3 traffic on your right side.  Be mindful of your footing as you reach the overgrown middle section of the trail, which has a precarious history of sweeping you off your feet, like it did Goka. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jun 21 Sat 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU O KILA

No Meeting @ Palace

(6 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)

Let's go bag a peak!  A ridgeline loop trail in the heart of Kahana Valley culminates in an exhilarating ascent of a very pointy peak with steep dropoffs. You will be grasping ropes and roots as handholds while you head down to three stream crossings and a dam pool to cool off. Coordinator Larry Lee, ph 263-4690.

Jun 21-22 Sat-Sun HO'OMALUHIA CAMPOUT

Join us on a 2-day tent campout in Windward Oahu at a place of relaxation and renewal of your soul, with the Koolau mountains on one side, a 32 acre lake on the other, all located in a 400 acre botanical garden.  No swimming is allowed but you can catch and release fish.  Bring your own firewood and fuel for campfires or hibachis/campstoves.  Picnic tables, campfire rings, restrooms with lights and cold showers are located nearby. Bring your citronella repellant to ward off those pesky mosquitoes. Coordinators Charlotte Yamane and Carole Moon, ph 395-8822.

Jun 22 Sun 8AM WAHIAWA HILLS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/WahiawA)

The intricate route of this cross country loop is often confusing and seems to change a little each year. Come prepared for multiple stream crossings, deep swimming holes, and lots of mosquitoes. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Jun 28 Sat 8AM KAUNALA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu)

Join us on this leisurely contour trail that starts on Drum Road near the Boy Scout camp in Pupukea.  Listen to your coordinator’s instructions to avoid missing the trail. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8378.

Jun 29 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY CASTLE

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 50

Reservations accepted beginning 8AM, June 16

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge-Contour/Punaluu)

Once again we'll climb the scenic switchbacks to the notch, cross Kaluanui Stream, and head for the waterfall overlook and the Koolau summit. Be prepared for stream crossings, serious mudholes, and a sometimes rough and narrow trail. Castle country is wild, rugged, and often inhospitable, even in summer. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Jul 6 8AM Sun ILIAHI RIDGE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

This pleasant loop off the Manana Trail has several ups and downs for a good workout. Expect a new variation which may increase the length a bit, but not the difficulty.
