The Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club

Schedule of Hikes and Events for

July - August - September 2007

A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ 8:30 at the Clubhouse

There will be some huffing and puffing over the difficult terrain, but then some ooing and ahing over the breathtaking views of the intricate ocean reefs hundreds of feet below...bring a camera! Parts of the trail appear impossible, particularly the descent of the windward cliffs, but appearances are deceiving. Just watch your step! Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 388-5373.

No Meeting @ Palace – Meet at Waianae First Hawaiian Bank parking lot

Become one with the trail as you hike this undulating loop trail nestled in the bosom of Mt. Kaala. Follow the coordinator’s instructions, due to the numerous trail junctions, which could lead you in the wrong direction. Coordinator Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

 

Jul 14 Sat 8AM KALAUAO

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Aiea)

Enjoy this pleasant deviation from the Aiea loop trail along the Kalauao stream.  With luck you may be rewarded with mountain apples, guava, and a swim.  But be prepared; bring food, water, and mosquito repellant. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Let’s get wet, wild, and muddy and climb this mystical peak.  Aerobically challenging with steep sections and dropoffs, so definitely not for the timid. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 551-0227.

A nice waterfall lunch awaits those who take this long meandering trail that crosses Koloa Stream many times. Ever present are the inherent hazards of gulch hikes: slippery rocks; flash flood; rock fall; mosquitoes. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

 

Jul 28 Sat 9AM LIKEKE

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Käneohe)

Named after Richard (Likeke) Davis, this pleasant loop hike hugs the base of the Nuuanu and Kalihi cliffs. Watch out for pigs on the return route through Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

The first half of this hike will get your heart rate pumping as you gain elevation.  The second half is a steep climb with some dropoffs, so extreme caution is required. Coordinators Grant & Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

 

Aug 5 Sun 8AM WAHIAWA HILLS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wahiawä)
A long meandering hike with disorienting twists and turns, and ample opportunities to go astray.Several stream crossings, and a couple of steep climbs that test your mettle, but a wonderful midpoint lunch spot with a deep inviting swimming hole, which makes all the effort worth it! Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 263-8330.

Our route starts in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Käneohe, but quickly moves beyond the “novice” category. The views are great, and provide a different perspective on Käneohe and the bay. Coordinators Dayle & Jacque Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu.

Think you're familiar with the hikes in Moanalua Valley? Here's one you might not have tried. It immediately ascends the valley's left ridge and follows that ridge far inland, before descending again to the valley floor and a long stroll back, crisscrossing the stream. The ridge has some narrow dikes (acrophobics take note) where extra caution is advised. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, ph 227-4572.

Enjoy a little adventure?  Don’t mind some stream crossings, mud, lush foliage, and a waterfall?  This hidden town gem may be for you.  Pay attention to your hike coordinator; bring some rain gear and bug repellant, too. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos , ph 375-0384 & Justin Ohara.

No Meeting @ Palace Meet @ Swanzy Beach parking lot

The new Manamana combines Kahekili and the makai portion of old Manamana into a short, but thrilling loop. Unless you have wings, watch your footing on the narrow dikes (yikes!) and the crumbly slopes (whopes!). Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Take this ridge hike to whatever level you want.  The views along the way are great, but pay attention to the turn around time and be sure you have adequate water, sunscreen, and rain gear. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.

Water parks have nothing on HTMC! Join us for this interesting stream hike/wade/swim exploratory adventure. Be prepared for negotiating slippery rocks. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Before the Waikäne Trail we reach, walk a long muddy road we must.  This treasured trail winds thru some of the wildest regions of Oahu to a puu with great views and the beckoning of the famed Koolau Summit Trail. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

 

Sep 16 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

Explore the Makiki Tantalus trail complex on this selected combination of maze-like trails. At the numerous junctions, carefully follow the coordinator’s instructions and trail marker ribbons, in order to navigate your way back to the start. In between, expect an aerobic workout! Sep 22 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City)

A fairly easy, rambling loop hike, not much up and down, with spectacular views of Pearl Harbor and the upper Waimano watershed. Lots of uluhe, and many trail junctions – long pants and common sense required. Plan to stay with the group. Coordinator Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

 

Sep 23 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU O KONA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou)

This big loop hike ascends the steep ridge on one side of Kuliouou Valley, crosses a narrow precipitous section of the Koolau summit, then descends the equally steep ridge on the opposite side of the valley. (clockwise or counter clockwise this year?) Either direction, expect heart thumping exhilaration and exertion. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

This ambitious and rewarding trek leads us along the spine of the Waianae Mountains. There are numerous native plants along some sections. Due to the potential adverse effect of large numbers of hikers on the fragile ecosystems in the area, the group size is limited. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.
