(8 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Hau’ula)
Once again we plan to hike this special Hauula hike. Extra caution is required to avoid slip-ups on the narrow dike sections, and to avoid damaging the many native plants along the mauka portion of the trail. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 and Justin Ohara.
Jan 28 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI’ANAE WATER WORKS
No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Steve’s house
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wai’anae)
The hike you’ll talk about for years. This hike is dedicated to the men and women who built and worked on the Wai’anae Sugar Plantation from 1879 to 1946. You’ll follow roads built to access the rain forest, flumes & pipe lines to bring water down to the fields. See the area where the plantation manager had a mountain retreat and the exotic plants growing there. See and enter tunnels dug to capture water percolating down thru “solid rock”. See a wall/bank that “weeps” water 24/7. All this in “dry Wai’anae”. If you plan to enter the 400’ long tunnel, your feet will get wet, and you’ll need a flashlight.
Coordinator “Wai’anae” Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.
Feb 3 Sat 8AM WAIMANO POOL
(3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Pacific Palisades)
Meander up Manana Trail for a bit and then drop steeply down to a pool, with an optional diversion of going above the falls for your snack. Explore the scout camps along the stream, and then find the loop up to the main trail. You still have to do heartbreak hill to get to the easy trail out. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 352-5141.
Feb 4 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KA’AU CRATER
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo)
This loop hike in the back of Palolo Valley finally returns to the schedule. Our goal is a hidden crater, formed by Maui’s hook and named after a supernatural chicken. To get there requires several stream crossings and a slippery climb next to a cascading waterfall. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Enjoy a little vino at sunset in back of Makua Valley, followed by Sunday breakfast in the tent with fresh fruit, apple/cinnamon pancakes and a hot cup of java. Coordinator Larry Lee, phone 263-4690.
Feb 18 Sun 8AM MOKULE’IA
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Waialua)

Feb 25 Sun 8AM LA’IE
(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La’ie)
Hot dusty farm roads lead into a looong contour trail, which winds through cooler groves of guava and then miles of lush native vegetation, all the way to the Ko’olau summit. It requires stamina, but the views are worth the looong trek...clouds permitting. There's also a detour to La’ie falls, if you're up to it. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Mar 4 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY DUPONT
No Meeting @ Palace
(10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waialua)
Thanks to a gracious landowner, we can access this challenging trail. A 4,000’ ascent to the Ka’ala summit rewards you with views of central O’ahu and bragging rights at the next HTMC potluck. This aerobically challenging hike also requires extra caution due to some very steep sections with severe drop-offs. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.
Mar 11 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE
(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)
After a long hiatus, we're once again visiting this old friend! This wonderful CCC contour trail winds gradually through eucalyptus forest and lush native vegetation, all the way to the Ko’olau summit. Since it hasn't been cleared in years, there may be a few downed trees and other obstacles, but that's a small price to pay. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.
Mar 17 Sat 8AM WAIHE’E VALLEY
(3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahalu’u)
Join us in a lush green valley for a road walk, flat at first, followed by an uphill section, to view Hamama Falls. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu

No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makakilo)
An exciting walk along the Wai’anae crest and rambling in the picturesque Ka’aikukui Gulch are the highlights of this hike. Sensitive ecosystems in the area make it necessary to restrict the number of participants. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.
Mar 25 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA RIDGE
(10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/La’ie)
A long grueling uphill trudge to the Ko’olau summit. The trail starts on hot dirt farm roads, squeezes through claustrophobic tunnels of guava, then steeply "roller-coasters" through dense native vegetation. It's still being debated whether the final "shortcut" up to the summit is actually any shorter. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Park in the first parking lot on the right as you enter Waimea. An additional $5 fee for the Center is required. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.
Apr 1 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING
It's once again that time of year when we tend to the business side of things....the Annual Membership meeting! Likely issues on the agenda are, approval of the renovation plans for the Clubhouse, approval of operating procedures for the new Endowment Fund, various changes to the by-laws, the election of new Board members, and possibly an increase in the membership dues! Lots of weighty issues, so plan on attending and casting your vote to help determine HTMC's future direction!
Apr 7 Sat 8AM WILIWILINUI
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Wai’alae)
