A tough, ungraded ridge trail all the way to the Ko’olau Summit. Few have made it to the top. Are you up for this exhausting hike? The TM crew will do their best to clear the trail, but no promises – as the upper section is all uluhe. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 and Justin Ohara.

Jul 23 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)
This hike rambles about in a vast valley filled with lush vegetation, meandering streams, inviting pools, and a maze of intersecting trails....be very careful to follow the correct one, and be prepared to do some wading. With luck, the mountain apples will be in season, and the mosquitoes will be on vacation. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.
Jul 29 Sat 8AM MO’O KAPU O HALOA CIRCUIT
No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Kualoa Ranch visitors parking lot
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hakipu’u-Ka’a’awa)
We may get confused on the maze of jeep roads leading up Hakipu’u Valley, but all roads lead to a low saddle that will take us over a muddy, steep trail into spectacular Ka’a’awa Valley, the filming site of Jurassic Park and other movies. Aside from the climb over the saddle, the hike is on jeep roads and is easy walking - almost a novice hike but for the length. Bring $5.00 extra for the fee to the ranch. We may be able to visit the photo gallery in the old military bunkers near the end of the hike. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.
Jul 30 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U KA’AUMAKUA
No Meeting @ Palace
(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)
A long valley road walk leads to a glorious ridge route around the back of Waikane and Kahana Valleys. The panoramic, but rare view from the Ka’aumakua summit is perhaps the finest on O’ahu. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Aug 13 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U MANAMANA
No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Swanzy Beach parking lot
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka’a’awa)
Not to be taken for an ordinary trail, it’s guaranteed to caffeinate sleepy Sunday hikers and energize you all day long. Heart-racing steep cliffs and spine tingling narrow dike trails are held together with duct tape. NOT! But held together with tufts of moss, roots, and rocks that add to the final punch. A dollop of caution is advised. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.
Aug 20 Sun 8AM ‘ILIAHI RIDGE
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades)
Enjoy the scenery of this ridge hike. This hike is meant to be savored, or you may miss a turn or two if you go too fast. Coordinator Larry Lee, phone 263-4690.
Aug 26 Sat 8AM Kaluanui Ridge
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge)
One of the easiest jaunts to the Koolau Summit requires a bit of huffing and puffing on the uphills, but the views of Waimanalo and Olomana in the distance are well worth it. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.eduAug 27 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA
No Meeting @ Palace – Meet @ Kuli’ou’ou Neighborhood Park
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuli’ou’ou)
This loop trail starts at sea level, climbs steeply to the Ko’olau summit, and follows the narrow precipitous rim encircling Kuli’ou’ou Valley. The views are spectacular, but watch your footing as well! The descent is equally steep, but an alternate return route is via the milder State trail. Either way the workout is strenuous, and the outing will be memorable. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, phone 227-4572.
Sep 3 Sun 8AM WAIMALU UKA
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Waimalu)
This beautiful trail winds its way above Waimalu Stream to the backcountry behind Pearlridge. Pay attention to the coordinator’s instruction since this hike is sometimes a loop and other times we backtrack to the trailhead. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384.

Oct 1 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA POOL
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La’ie)
A combination of long dirt roads (boring), hot steep hillsides (grueling), and tight tunnels of guava (claustrophobic), takes you half way to the Ko’olau Summit, before descending steeply into a dark mysterious valley. You are eventually rewarded by the appearance of a stream, and two delightful waterfalls with inviting plunge pools...a pleasant place to take your lunch and a cooling dip, before returning the way you came. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.
