Apr 2 Sat 8AM KAMILOIKI
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)
From the Pahua Heiau, scamper up the lava rock slope, scurry along the ridge while scanning the interesting escarpment to the left and the valley on the right. After a final push through ironwood trees, scrunch down to enjoy scenes of Waimanalo. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

Apr 3 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA'U GULCH
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hau'ula)
Yes, it's a long way just to swim under a cold waterfall, but getting there is half the fun. The journey will criss-cross Kaipapa'u Stream over slippery rocks, meander through dense rain forest, and wind past rock dikes. Be alert to flash flood conditions. Coordinator Clayton Kong, ph 545-2467.

The Saturday, April 9th hike at the Kualoa Ranch. That hike will be rescheduled to another Saturday. Instead it looks as if Ma'eli'eli, overlooking Kaneohe Bay, will be substituted for it. Further details will be published here and at our web site soon.

Apr 9 Sat 9AM MEMBERS ONLY MO'O KAPU O HALOA CIRCUIT
No Meeting @ Palace - Meet @ Kualoa Ranch visitors parking lot
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hakipu'u-Ka'a'awa)
We may get confused on the maze of jeep roads leading up Hakipu'u Valley, but all roads lead to a low saddle that will take us over a muddy, steep trail into spectacular Ka'a'awa Valley, site of Jurassic Park and many another tropical Extravaganza. Aside from the climb over the saddle, the hike is on jeep roads and easy walking - almost a novice hike but for the length. Bring $5.00 extra for the fee to the ranch. We may be able to visit the photo gallery in the old military bunkers near the end of the hike. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Apr 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KULEPEAMOA RIDGE
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley)
This challenging loop behind Niu has a little bit of everything: a pleasant valley stroll, steep ridge hiking, a summit catwalk, and native plants and birds along the way. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Apr 16 Sat CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDE SHOW
5:00 pm Potluck
7: 00 pm Slide Show
Join your hiking friends for a potluck/cookout at our Waimanalo clubhouse. George Shoemaker will present a slide show featuring aspects of outdoor life in Northwest Alaska, including photos taken at Siberian Yupik and Innuit villages located above the Arctic Circle. John Hall & Grant Oka will present, "An Inside Look at Trail Maintenance". Call Brenda Cowan at 396-6933 or email her at "b.hiker@verizon.net" to let us know what dish you'll be bringing or whether you'll be contributing $7 towards the food/paper goods. Non-members pay an additional $2 to attend. (Everybody please bring your own soda, juice etc). Hope to see you there!

Apr 17 Sun 8AM MOANALUA
(10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)
Don't let the rambling valley road fool you. Soon enough we slip into a maze of forested glades, burbling brooks and hau bush thickets as we find our way to the saddle on the summit. Here we can rest and enjoy our well-earned lunch with a dizzying but spectacular view of windward O'ahu before braving the return journey. Coordinators Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596 and Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Apr 23 Sat 8AM KALANI
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Ridge/Kalani)
Thanks to HTMC President Peter and the "Hooters" who developed this trail. The first half is a steady uphill on a dirt road, then a meander down a ridge to snack under some trees that hide the nearby homes from view. Coordinator Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

Apr 24 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING
Join us at our Waimanalo Clubhouse for this very important meeting. The future of the clubhouse, as well as important bylaws changes, will be discussed. We encourage your participation in this pivotal meeting. Additionally, the terms are up for some of the board members, and replacements will be selected.

May 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi)
A steep initial ascent, then a LONG hike along an undulating ridge paralleling Kalihi Valley. Lots of native vegetation, good views along the way, and the final reward is an overview of Kane'ohe from the Ko'olau summit. Pay close attention to the trail markers on the return trip! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

May 8 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)
Deep in Waiahole Valley we ford a stream or two, and take the old ditch trail, following the contour of the mountains. Watch for the bird's-nest ferns. The loop route provides variety and panoramic views. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

May 14 Sat 8AM KAWA'EWA'E
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane'ohe)
We start in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Kane'ohe with an easy hillside stroll, but the route quickly moves a bit beyond the "Novice" category. The views are great and provide a different perspective on Kane'ohe and the Bay. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu

May 15 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI'ANAE-KA'ALA
No Meeting @ Palace - Meet @ First Hawaiian Bank, Waianae
(5 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai'anae)
Short, Sweet and Steep describes Carole, as well as this route to the highest bog on O'ahu. Extra caution (for the trail not Carole) is advised on the near vertical sections with steep drop offs on both sides. Coordinator "Waianae" Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

May 22 Sun 8AM WAIAU
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau)
For the rugged and discriminating hiker we offer this rough, lengthy, ungraded hike to the leeward Ko'olau Range with superb views at the summit. Coordinators Darrell Teruya, phone 227-4572 Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

May 28 Sat 8AM KAUKONAHUA STREAM
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge Valley/Wahiawa)
Ramble on the road, tip-toe on the trail, frolic in the freshwater pools of the longest stream on O'ahu. Coordinator Larry Lee, phone 263-4690.

May 29 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY NIHOA GULCH
Reservations required - limit of 20
No Meeting @ Palace
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Mokule'ia)
This rocky scramble leads us above the Mokule'ia coastal shelf to connect with the Kuaokala Trail and the Kealia Trail. Extra caution is required in many places. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.

Jun 4 Sat 8AM National Trails Day Triple Treat
MT. OLYMPUS

(6 Mi/ Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis Hts.)
Join Grant for good hiking, good views and good scrambling. HECO is still lusting after Wa'ahila ridge as a power line conduit but, for now, this beautiful ridge is still a trail. Some sections require scrambling and some sections are narrow with steep drop offs (especially near the summit). Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.
WA'AHILA-KOLOWALU
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis)
Don't want to go to the summit? Join Justin on the Kolowalu escalator between Wa'ahila Ridge and Manoa Valley. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 778-8629.
PUU PIA
(2 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Manoa)
For a shorter outing, join Steve on a climb to this Manoa knoll with varied valley views available. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Jun 5 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE
(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)
This long ridge hike penetrates deep into the heart of the central Ko'olau wilderness. Originally contoured, the trail has deteriorated over the years so be prepared for some uneven, muddy, and/or overgrown stretches. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jun 11 Sat 9AM 'AHUIMANU
No Meeting @ Palace - Meet @ Temple Valley Shopping Center parking lot
(2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahalu'u)
A step backward in time thru the once terraced taro patches on the windward side, this hike is both educational, if the signs are still readable, as well as a way to get a good workout on a Saturday morning! There might be mud and mosquitoes if it's been raining. Be prepared. Coordinator Donna Davis-Brown, ph 422-7830.

Jun 12 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U MANAMANA
No Meeting @ Palace - Meet @ Swanzy Beach Park
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka'a'awa)
Experience trail maintenance in process! The TM crew will be slightly ahead of the hikers. Meet the hard-working folks who do so much for us. Experience the difference between a cleared and uncleared trail. Maybe you'll be so impressed, you'll want to join them! Or bring along your own tool today and help out. Remember - Safety First!!
In the 1950s, the legendary Dick Davis developed this short, but demanding loop above Kahana Valley. The steep ascent is more of a rock climb than a hike, and the narrow summit crossing is a frightening tightrope walk without a net! The views are stupendous, but don't let your eyes stray from the trail for too long. Save some adrenalin for the equally steep descent. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 and Justin Ohara.

Jun 19 Sun 8AM 'AIEA RIDGE
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/'Aiea)
GRANTed, this trail offers rich rewards for those who STEP beyond the generalities. Do not throw caution to the wind when hiking this lengthy, undulating trail to the summit with superb views of the Kane'ohe coastline. Coordinator Mike Fujita, ph 550-2535.

Jun 25 Sat 8AM 'AIEA BISECTUAL
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/'Aiea)
This trail begins from the Aiea Loop Trail and at an intersection veers off to the middle ridge via the paperbark forest, descending to the bottom of the loop trail to a campground at its terminus. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

Jun 26 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)
A nice waterfall lunch spot awaits those who take this long meandering trail that crosses Koloa Stream many times. Pleasant scenes of lush native vegetation fill your senses along the way. Ever present are the inherent hazards of gulch hikes: slippery rocks, flash flood, rock fall, water/mud borne bacteria, mosquito borne viruses. Coordinator Clayton Kong, ph 545-2467.

Jul 3 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA-LA'IE
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/La'ie)
A long counterclockwise loop that has variety...road walking, guava tunnels, native vegetation, narrow primitive trail, summit walking, views of the coast, and a graded contour trail for the return trip. There's even the opportunity for a cooling dip in the La'ie pool. Just pay attention to direction markers at the MANY junctions. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.
