Schedule of Hikes and Events for

January - February - March 2005

A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

Jan 1 Sat 8AM KOKO CRATER
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai'i Kai)
Wake up to 2005 on our traditional New Year's Day hike up Koko Crater. The heart-pounding climb and narrow rock rim contrast sharply with the vastness of the Pacific and the whales cavorting below the bright blue of the sky. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

A hard scramble up a hot ridge leads to panoramic views of Nanakuli and Lualualei Valleys. Wear sturdy boots and bring plenty of water. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Join your hiking friends for a potluck/cookout at our Waimanalo clubhouse. As the highlight of the evening, Met Lebar & Patrick Rorie will be presenting the slide show. Met will take us on a tour of the Pacific Islands of Yap & Palau. He & Patrick will share their exciting kayak trip on the North Shore of Molokai and a hike to Wailua Valley, with a short video for your entertainment. This chop suey hike is for the all-around hiker. Contour trail, ridge trail, stream trail, woodland climb, you name it. Still, it's a wonderful journey through the varied flora and terrain of the Nu'uanu area. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 and Justin Ohara.

(2 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Makapu'u)
This shortish hike allows us to walk and clamber along the headland of Makapu'u to visit the site of the automated lighthouse, and the abandoned lightkeeper's home. Hot sun, cool tradewinds, just right. Bring lots of water. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.

It's a long hike just to swim in the 2nd best swimming hole on O'ahu, but getting there and back is half the fun. You can day-dream your cares away as you float on the waters of Kaukonahua. Don't even think about the steep hill that you have yet to climb. You can feel the warmth of Steve Becker, Dick Booth, and Dick Davis smiling down on us as we have a grand ole time back in the Hills of Wahiawa. Coordinators Grant & Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

If Kamaile'unu and Heleakala intimidate you, give this hike a try. A good introduction to Wai'anae Coast hiking, dry rocky Pu'u O Hulu Kai and Uka are the twin peaks on the ridge separating Nanakuli from Ma'ili and feature outstanding panoramic views of Lualualei Valley, the Wai'anae Range, and the Leeward Coast. Here's a scrambler's delight. Up from Makapu'u Lookout to the ridge above to the cliff-top trail that overlooks Sea Life Park. Go past the Puka Rock to the Three Poles above Waimanalo. Take a lunch break, enjoy the view and then down the steep zig-zag to the shoreline below. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, phone 227-4572.

Feb 19 Sat -Mon MOKULE'IA CAMPOUT

Backpack to a secluded campsite nestled back of Makua Valley to the sound of silence for three days and two nights as you watch your days go out in a quiet blaze of color. Priceless! Coordinator Larry Lee, phone 263-4690.

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Waialua)
This nicely graded trail provides a relatively painless climb to an overlook of Makua Valley along the Wai'anae summit. At the campsite you can check out the weekend backpackers and their gear. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Feb 26 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City)
A fairly easy, rambling loop hike, not much up and down, with spectacular views of Pearl Harbor and the upper Waimano watershed. One of our newer hikes. Much uluhe - long pants desirable. Many junctions - plan to stay with the group. Coordinator Mike Fujita, ph 550-2535.

Feb 27 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PALEHUA LOOP

With greatly appreciated special permission from the Hawaii Nature Conservancy, we get to hike this wonderful trail again this year. Expect great views of leeward and central O'ahu as well as native plants, snails, and birds. Coordinator "Wai'anae" Steve Rohrmayr, ph 696-4746.

Most of the elevation is gained by car, then we start hiking near those mysterious "golf balls" above Yokohama Bay. The trail follows the Makua Valley rim, with breathtaking views of two coastlines, and a choice of relaxing lunch spots..so don't forget cameras and bentos! Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

This extremely long and VERY STEEP climb takes us to the highest point on O'ahu. We may have a grand view, but more likely we'll be ensconced in clouds. Viewing the "bog" is a treat, as is Larry's lecture on the differences between cows and horses. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Mar 20 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina)
This hike will you leave you 'loopy'. It's an arduous climb to the Ko'olau Summit, a tightrope walk on a narrow razor edge, then a descent so steep that you'll be hanging on, hand over hand, to the trees. Be sure to watch for ribbons or the loop may become a loop-d-loop! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

This climb to O'ahu's third highest peak is short, sweet, and steep. Along the route through the Nature Conservancy preserve is a variety of native birds, plants, and snails. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Hike this long, ungraded trail in back of Moanalua Valley up to its mist-shrouded peak and when the pukas open up, be rewarded with outstanding, spectacular views. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596.

Apr 2 Sat 8AM KAMILOIKI
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)
From the Pahua Heiau, scamper up the lava rock slope, scurry along the ridge while scanning the interesting escarpment to the left and the valley on the right. After a final push through ironwood trees, scrunch down to enjoy scenes of Waimanalo. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

Apr 3 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA'U GULCH
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hau'ula)
Yes, it's a long way just to swim under a cold waterfall, but getting there is half the fun. The journey will criss-cross Kaipapa'u Stream over slippery rocks, meander through dense rain forest, and wind past rock dikes. Be alert to flash flood conditions. Coordinator Clayton Kong, ph 545-2467.
