(20 Mi/Intermediate/Mountain/Kaua'i: Koke'e, Na Pali-Kona, Alaka'i, Waimea Canyon)

While Kalalau is Kaua'i's classic tourist backpack, Cowboy Flats is quite the opposite, passing through the Garden Isle's remote wilderness only a few miles from Wai'ale'ale, the highest mountain on Kaua'i and the wettest spot on earth. Scenic overlooks, surging streams, native birds and a rich variety of native plants lead to the spectacular descent into Waimea Canyon, concluding with a tough climb on the Kukui Trail. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Jul 4 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE

(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)

A challenging hike either part way or all the way to the summit with views of Kahana and Punalu’u as the reward. Coordinator Darrell Teruya, phone 227-4572.

Jul 17 Sat 8AM TANTALUS RAMBLE

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

When is a trail not a trail? When you follow the leader on this delightful romp on Tantalus connecting parts of different trails with short-cuts and bypasses until even the old-timers are confooosed. But it's fun and good exercise so long as you don't lose track of where the leader's going.Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 382-4709.

July 17 Sat CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDE SHOW

5:00 pm Potluck

Jul 18 Sun 8AM MANANA

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

Jul 25 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie)

Wearing your Sunday best along with your spiked heels or Japanese tabis, we (hop) rock and roll the Koloa Stream 23+ times culminating your hiking dance fervor at a waterfall for the big splash. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jul 31 Sat 6PM KA’IWA RIDGE

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)

Led by the reverie of the moonstuck Mz. Moon, moonbeaming our way with flashlites (beware of dropoffs), catching the moonrise over the moonscape hills of Lanikai, culminating with a nite of moonshining (nonsense chatter) at the windy top. Park and meet at Kailua Beach Park in their parking lot area just across from Buzz' Steakhouse. Coordinator Carole Moon, ph 596-4864.

Aug 1 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KAHEKILI

No meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kaaawa)

From below, this massive rock cliff appears impossible to surmount, but by very carefully following the steep narrow trail, you can actually reach not only the summit, but a lush hidden valley and a delightful little waterfall. The views are breathtaking, and you may even spy a white hibiscus. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Aug 8 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)

We weave several trails of the Makiki Tantalus Trail system together for a day of ups and downs as we connect the valley trail to the cliff trail and back down again. A nice aerobic workout. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596.

Aug 14 Sat CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY

(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

The Go-Ja hike is a rugged route honoring two of our stalwart old-timers. Be prepared for a steep ascent, a stiff descent, and some fine ridge and valley walking. Coordinators Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384 and Justin Ohara.

Aug 22 Sun 8AM LA’IE

(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La’ie)

or

LA’IE POOLS

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Ridge/La’ie)

Don't be discouraged by the initial hot dusty roads, as they soon give way to shady guava tunnels and cool vegetation. Halfway up the trail there's a delightful little waterfall and pool where you can take a dip, and then turn back. The more hardy hikers can continue up the long graded trail, all the way to the summit. Coordinators Darrell Teruya, phone 227-4572 and Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

Aug 28 Sat 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KANEHOA HAPAPA

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Contour/Kunia)

Portions of our route pass through areas with sensitive ecosystems, hence our need to limit the number of hikers, thereby reducing the impact to the area. Native plants and spectacular views along the Wai’anae summit make this a very special hike. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Aug 29 Sun 8AM WAIMALU UKA

(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge and Valley/Pearl Ridge)

We start on the Waimalu Ditch trail, but soon leave it to wander up a side valley where a spectacular waterfall will be seen (if it is raining hard). From the top of the falls a steep scramble takes us to a ridge and an easy trail back to the cars. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Sep 5 Sun 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)

Initial elevation gain is quick and painless, as you DRIVE to the top of Pupukea. Then you hike a meandering dirt road, and a moderately steep contour trail (the KST) through lush woodlands to a summit spot with vast panoramic views of two coastlines. But don't overshoot this turnaround spot, because the KST continues for MILES! Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Sep 11 Sat 8AM KOLOA KAI

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie)

Enjoy this short and sweet hike on the windward side that treats you to a little hill and a little stream. A flash flood hazard is always present on any stream hike. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kapalama)

Join us for this special opportunity to travel a trail we haven’t hiked for many a year. The early part of the hike is fairly easy, but as we near the Ko’olau crest, the route is steeper and more difficult. Native plants abound. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.

Sep 19 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)

A valley loop beside (and into, and across) bubbling babbling Waianu Stream. The tree ferns are lovely and the shoreward views impressive, but you may enjoy them longer than you planned, if you miss the important junctions. Caution is needed on slippery rocks and steep slopes. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Sep 25 Sat 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY WAIHE’E VALLEY RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 30

(3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahaluu)

Sept 25 Sat CLUBHOUSE POTLUCK / SLIDE SHOW

5:00 pm Potluck

7:15 pm Slide Show

Join your hiking friends for a potluck/cookout at our Waimanalo clubhouse. As the highlight of the evening, "Guy Archer and Andrea Bartlett will show slides taken in the Ruby Mountain area of Nevada and at southwestern Pueblo sites; and a short video taken on Oahu hiking trails." Call Brenda Cowan at 396-6933 or email her at "b.hiker.verizon.net" to let us know what dish you'll be bringing or whether you'll be contributing $7 towards the food. Non-members pay an additional $2 to attend.

Sep 26 Sun 8AM ‘AIEA RIDGE

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/’Aiea)

This is NOT that meek mild little novice loop trail...this is a long mean arduous ridge trek, which climbs laboriously all the way to the summit! It seems to go on forever, grinding you down, chewing you up, and sometimes spitting you out, right over the edge...(just ask Grant!) Wanna consider doing the loop instead!? Coordinators Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Oct 3 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U KA’AUMAKUA

No meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info

(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)
