Schedule of Hikes and Events for

January - February - March 2004

A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

Jan 1 Thu 8AM KOKO CRATER (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai'i Kai)

It's a New Year! So start the new year off right with a heart pounding climb and breathtaking views. Enjoy HTMC camaraderie and no hangover. Hazards: Inclines, Steep dropoffs, Crumbly rock, Narrow sections. Not suitable for those with fear of heights. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

Jan 4 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAMAILE'UNU No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info (7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai'anae)

Why climb the largest pile of rocks on O'ahu? Obviously someone must know because HTMC hikes this strenuous route every January. This route has great views while challenging your hiking fitness all the way. Hazards: Inclines, Steep dropoffs, Crumbly rock, Narrow sections. Not suitable for the acrophobic. Jan 11 Sun 8AM MT. OLYMPUS (6 Mi/ Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis Hts.)

This favorite "Honolulu Hike" starts from Wa'ahila State Park. Good views open up and only get better towards the Ko'olau Summit. Let's hope the power lines never take over this ridge. Hazards: Steep dropoffs near the summit. Coordinator Peter Kempf, ph 384-2221 or 735-2220.

Jan 17 Sat 8AM KAMILOIKI (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)

Start from the heiau, and scramble your way to the ridgetop. From there it's up & down undulations towards the Ko'olau Crest where breathtaking views of Waimanalo and environs await. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

Jan 18 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY KALENA (7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield)

Lots of steep scrambly uphill climbing, and one of the narrowest scariest dikes on O'ahu! (crossing on hands & knees is acceptable). Great views of the Central Plain and Leeward coast, and you might even spot a tree snail or two...and watch out for those thorny blackberry bushes....OUCH! Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 864-8130.

Jan 24 Sat CLUBHOUSE BBQ/ SLIDE SHOW 4:30 pm Barbeque-Potluck 6:30 pm Slide Show "Native Flora & Fauna of Hawai'i"

Join your trail mates for a potluck/bbq at our Waimanalo clubhouse. For the evenings slideshow, Nathan Yuen will share his hiking adventures to Kamakou Preserve on Moloka'i, the Na Pali Coast of Kaua'i, Waimanu Valley on the Big Island, and other remote places to capture on film the native flora and fauna in Hawai'i. Jan 25 Sun 8AM MOANALUA (10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)

We walk miles of shady dirt road to the back of the valley, where we veer into the Western drainage and plunge into the woods, making NUMEROUS stream crossings. The trail's moderately level until a final very STEEP climb to the lunch spot, with it's fabulous views into Ha'iku valley. The sharp-eyed may even spot the ancient aircraft wreckage. Jan 31 Sat 8AM MAKAPU'U POINT (2 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Makapu'u)

We'll scramble up the hill to the bunker at the top and scope out the views of the windward side. After exploring the old lighthouse colony, we'll wander down the road to our cars. Option: The tidal pools entice us to drop down and dive in for a cool dip. Coordinator Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.

Feb 1 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKAPU'U TOM-TOM No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info (4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu'u)

One of our most strenuous but beautiful trails! You follow the top of the steep rocky ridge above Waimanalo, and descend the historic (near vertical) Tom-Tom trail. Lots of ups & downs, lots of exposure, lots of loose rock, lots of sun,... and lots of GREAT views of the crystal blue waters hundreds of feet below! Coordinator Thea Ferentinos, ph 375-0384.

Feb 8 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

A big looping Tantalus trail that takes us high up along ridges, deep down into valleys, meandering through bamboo forests, rock-hopping across streams, traipsing above waterfalls, and wandering among ancient stone walls. A varied and interesting trail, but follow the ribbons or it may become VERY interesting! Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Feb 14 Sat 8AM KAWA'EWA'E (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane'ohe)

Friendship Gardens is the pleasant start to this windward foothill ramble with plenty of ups and downs and dangling ropes. Depending on our route, the heiau may only be visible from afar. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Feb 14-16 Sat-Mon MOKULEIA CAMPOUT RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

A six-miler, intermediate backpacking trek to a campsite at a 2,200 ft. elevation; nestled between the grandeur of Ka'ala and the tranquility of Pahole; resting and recreationing for three sun-sizzling days and two star-studded nites. Viewing of surreal sunsets every evening is mandatory! Limited to 15 participants. Coordinators Carole Moon, ph 596-4864 and Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.

Feb 15 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY MAKUA RIM No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Mokule'ia)

From the Mokule'ia campsite, we follow the great rim of Makua, past the Piko pines to an unforgettable overlook. Make a loop via the Nike site, or return the way you came. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Feb 22 Sun 8AM WAIAU (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau)

Join your fellow mountain men and women on this never ending Ko'olau ridge hike. Only the stout of heart and fleet of foot will reach the distant summit. The rest of us can be content with good company and a good workout. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Feb 28 Sat 8AM WAIMANO POOL (3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Pacific Palisades)

The hike down to the refreshing stream is a breeze as you, hopefully, pass mountain apple trees in bloom. Just make sure you are well-rested before you attempt the climb back up the hill. You'll definitely lose a few pounds on this hike! Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.

Feb 28 Sat CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY - Hau Arbor

Calling all volunteers. Come help us beautify and improve our property. We will begin work on the hau arbor with painting and tree trimming. Pick-ups needed to haul away will be especially appreciated. Call Peter Kempf ph 384-2221.

Feb 29 Sun 8:30AM MEMBERS ONLY DUPONT No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info (10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waialua)

Simply the best day hike on the Wai'anae Range. Dupont has it all: terrific views, copious native flora in the summit bog, a wonderful transition from pastureland to dryland forest to rain forest en route to O'ahu's highest point, and a great workout (4,000' elev. gain). Don't miss out! Use caution on narrow areas and cable sections. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Mar 6 Sat 5 PM, CLUBHOUSE BBQ/ SLIDE SHOW 4:30 pm - Barbeque/Potluck 6:30 pm - Slide Show "Treasures from the Legacy of Thelma Greig" Come early for a dip and then participate in the BBQ/Potluck at the clubhouse. Thelma donated her old transparencies to Ernie Miki of the Zone XII photo club. He transformed them into a great show. There are many shots of old HTM club members and trips of thirty years ago, all from Thelma's perspective. Mar 7 Sun 8AM KAHUKU-KST-MALAEKAHANA LOOP (12 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/La'ie)

Some time ago this substantial and somewhat surreptitious serpentine summit loop was serendipitously stumbled upon. We intersect Kahuku Ridge and hike up to the Ko'olau Summit Trail where we will choose either an exquisite North or elegant Windward Shore view for lunch. Completing the loop we will descend Malaekahana Ridge eventually returning to the exact spot from which we started. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596.

Mar 13 Sat 8AM KALUANUI RIDGE (3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)

Ever been to the Ko'olau summit? If not, then you gotta do this hike, for this trail is the shortest, easiest route to the Ko'olau summit. Take advantage of its open status and enjoy the switchback built by an HTMC/Sierra Club collaboration. Coordinator Laura Owens, ph 595-9023.

"The hill of Kahoe's fire" rocks!!! This magnificent loop features awesome views, a wonderful summit ridge walk and intriguing native plants. Truly one of O'ahu's finest. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.

Mar 21 Sun 8AM KUAOKALA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha)

One of the most scenic trails on O'ahu; lofty views of Makua Valley and Mount Ka'ala (in the distance) will be yours if you participate in this event. Perhaps the coordinator will take us to the abandoned missile site for lunch, or even allow the more ambitious hikers to tramp along the excellent Makua Rim Trail. Mar 26 Fri 8AM ULUPA'U HEAD RESERVATIONS REQUIRED No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info (1/2 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Mokapu)

Grab your hat, umbrella, camera and CLOSED TOED SHOES for this delightful stroll through Ulupa'u Head Crater. The Boobie birds will be lookin' at you! Hope we see some of the beautiful, fluffy newly hatched babies. CALL TO MAKE RESERVATIONS. Coordinator Donna Davis-Brown, ph 422-7830.

Mar 27 Sat 8AM NU'UANU LOOP (4 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Hillside/Nu'uanu)

We start from the Judd trail to the switchback trail to the Nu'uanu contour trail and on to the Pauoa Flats Trail to the Nu'uanu Valley lookout. After lunch we continue on the ridge trail which will meet the contour trail. Finally we descend down the switchback trail for a refreshing dip in the Jackass Ginger pool. We return to our old loop route down to the Honouliuli Contour Trail, thanks to the Nature Conservancy. Sensitive ecosystems in the area make it necessary to restrict the number of participants. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Apr 3 Sat 8AM MALAEKAHANA LOOP (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La'ie)

This is a loop route on a shady stream trail and a ridge trail with a great view of the La'ie coastline. We will criss cross the stream rock hopping, so be careful. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 384-4821 or turner@hawaii.edu

Apr 18 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING

The board has changed the date of the annual meeting to allow plenty of time for the members to receive and review all the info on the important topics we will be discussing. The bylaws committee has worked hard reviewing proposed changes to the bylaws. The result provides improved clarity, while retaining the general intent of the original. Please join us under the arbor in Waimanalo! The future of the Club is at hand!
