A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules. We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars. Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times. Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes. Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes. Oct 5 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE (14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa) A long, cool one keeping pace with Halawa Valley on your right and H-3 on your left ending with a climactic finish at the summit satiated with views of Kane'ohe Bay and Ha'iku. Oct 18 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City) A pleasant family loop hike, with only modest ups and downs and spectacular views of the Wai'anae's and Ko'olau Crest across upper Waimanu Valley. There are many trail intersections, so you should plan to stay with the group unless you are quite familiar with the area. Oct 19 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KIPAPA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, LIMIT OF 40 (12 mi/advanced/ridge/Mililani) HTMC and others have reopened this magnificent contour trail built by the CCC in 1935. The long, but rewarding route climbs steadily to a windswept Waikane overlook at the Ko'olau summit. The last mile offers some of the finest ridge walking on the island. Nov 9 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U O KONA (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuli'ou'ou) If you're familiar with the Kuli'ou'ou state trail, and want something a little more strenuous and exciting, here's a variation which encircles the entire valley. The ascent is confusing, so watch for trail ribbons. The summit section is narrow, so watch your footing. Otherwise, just watch the fabulous views! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048. Nov 15 Sat 8AM MAUNAWILI FOURTH ANNUAL ALL WAHINE HIKE (10 Mi/Intermediate/Hilly/Maunawili) Come one, come all you buff females and go the distance on this beautiful trail! The views are outstanding as we traipse this trail which snakes along the base of the windward side of the Koolaus from the Pali Highway to Waimanalo. Nov 23 Sun 8AM LA'IE (10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La'ie) This hike transitions from dirt roads, to pine forests, to 'guava-tunnels', to native vegetation. All of it is beautiful (well, maybe not the dirt roads). The ascent is long and arduous, but the view from the top is worth the trudge. This is that nerve shattering, teeth chattering, knee knocking hike that isn't for the faint of heart or acrophobes! There are STEEP climbs, narrow dikes, and sheer drop-offs! Dec 6 Sat 8AM KA'ENA POINT (4 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Ka'ena) Grab your sun glasses, sunscreen and hat for this sunny shoreline hike. Bring plenty of water, your camera and bathing suit as the tidal pools at O'ahu's most western point are very inviting. You might even see whales or albatross as a bonus. Dec 7 Sun 8AM MANANA DITCH (8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades) Those with a yen for adventure can do battle with this infamous hike. The many ups and downs always come as a surprise and quickly reduce your energy level to zero. Midway through the loop, you'll find a second wind and emerge triumphant from the Pacific palisade. Dec 21 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY OLOMANA (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Olomana) Who can forget their first ascent of Mt Olomana? Or the renewed pride of subsequent ascents? Dec 28 Sun 8AM LANIPO (7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki) This arduous but rewarding route is a favorite of O'ahu hikers. Jan 1 Thu 8AM KOKO CRATER (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai'i Kai) It's a New Year! So start the new year off right with a heart pounding climb and breathtaking views.
