A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules. We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars. Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times. Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes. Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry maps. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes. Jul 3-6 Thu-Sun HALEAKALA CRATER BACKPACK (RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 12, PARTICIPANTS SCREENED AND APPROVED BY TRIP COORDINATOR) (20 Mi/Intermediate/Mountain/Maui: Haleakala National Park) Haleakala, lit. "house of the sun", is Maui's classic backpack trip. During this 4-day, 3-night loop of the amphitheater crater, we will see towering cliffs, colorful spatter cones, and dark lava tubes, as well as endangered nene geese and Hawaiian silverswords. Jul 6 Sun MALAEKAHANA POOL (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Laie) Prolonged stretches of her sweltering, never-ending road; then yielding to the boughs of her verdant stands of strawberry guavas and ironwoods; and finally climaxing with a long, cool dip in her waterhole down at the stream. Sat Jul 12 8AM PUU MAELIELI (3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Kahaluu) A relatively easy jaunt in the windward Koolau foothills provides nice views of the coastline on one side, and the fluted Koolau wall on the other. A World War II bunker is the end-point. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

For the evening's slide show, Nathan Yuen will share photos of his adventures along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai and Kokee. He will also show one of his favorite things to photograph--Ohia lehua. Jul 20 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH (7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Laie) We first hike a ridge, then a meandering stream through lush native forest. Lunch is at the foot of a large waterfall. Possible Hazards include: slippery stream crossings, falling rocks, flash floods, leptospirosis. Possible Joys: good company, native plants, native birds, oopu swimming in cool mountain water. Jul 26 Sat 8AM LIKEKE (6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kaneohe) Built by the legendary Dick Davis of HTMC fame, this trail winds along the base of the Koolau range. You'll hike varied terrain with windward views to a picturesque waterfall beneath the Pali lookout for lunch. Mosquito repellent is a must at the waterfall. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 488-1161.

Aug 3 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY (6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana) This is a foray into a beautiful lush green valley, crisscrossed with side trails and stream crossings. Staying dry is not an option. Sun Aug 10 8AM CHOICE OF 2 HIKES SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE (9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa) Army engineers built this contoured route in the 1920s. The trail has seen better days, but it remains the premier route to the central Koolau summit. Below the trail are pocket gulches with magnificent ohia trees and native birds Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206. OR KAUKONAHUA FLOAT (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge Valley/Wahiawa) Join us for this revised float/scramble on a different section of the stream. Aug 23 Sat 8AM LAIE POOLS (5 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Ridge/Laie) Your reward for trudging up the dusty dirt road, and threading through the tight tunnels of guava trees, is a gem of a waterfall with a splash pool. Sun Aug 31 8AM WAIANAE KAI (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Waianae) This loop hike is part uphill, then a ramble, then a downhill, then another ramble with lots of native flora and superb views along the way. Sep 7 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU KAAUMAKUA (11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane) On top of Puu Kaaumakua is the finest panorama on Oahu, according to HTM legend Al Miller.
