- Jul 7 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE
(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)
Army engineers built this contoured route in the 1920s. The trail
has seen better days, but it remains the premier route to the
central Ko'olau summit. Below the trail are pocket gulches with
magnificent 'ohi'a trees and native birds. Coordinator Arnold
Fujioka, ph 625-9431.
-
- Jul 14 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)
Hazards: Slippery Rocks; Flash Flood; Rockfall
There's a ridge to climb, then a stream to criss cross. Lunch
is at a small pool below a larger waterfall. Drop your packs.
A short swim, and a minor climb bring you up close and personal
to the waterfall and plunge pool. Look for native plants along
the way and 'o'opu and hihiwai in the stream. Coordinator Steve
Brown, ph 247-8845.

(20 Mi/Masochist/Ridge/ Pupukea to Waikane)
This trip is only for the toughest of backpackers. The weather:
usually cloudy, wet, and often cool. The tail: rough, muddy,
overgrown, and obscure, but rarely all at the same time. You'll
encounter windy lookouts, 2000-foot cliffs and an incredible
variety of native rainforest plants along the way. Expect the
worst, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Coordinator Grant
Oka, ph 674-1459.
-
- Jul 20 Sat 8AM 'AIEA BISECTUAL
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/'Aiea)

- Jul 21 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAHEKILI
No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka'a'awa)
It takes a different kind of Wild One to hike this place of wild
beauty and grand scale architecture. Rugged enough for a stiff
hike clambering over crumbling dikes and peaks scoured by wind
and rain yet as liberating as moseying around naked at a waterfall,
hidden from view, tucked away in a narrow valley. Coordinator
Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.
-
- Jul 27 Sat 8AM KAMILOIKI
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai)
Usually hot, dry, and sometimes windy, this ridge will lead you
between a beguiling Eden on the west and a crowded valley on
the east. Happily, it tops out with a sudden and startling vision
of the windward coast. Check out the Pahua Heiau at the foot
of this trail. Coordinator Joyce Oka, ph 674-1459.
-
- Jul 28 Sun 8AM LA'IE / LA'IE POOLS
(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La'ie)
A hot dusty road gives way to guava tree "tunnels",
then a LONG graded contour trail to the Ko'olau summit. Rated
advanced, more for the length than the difficulty. Those wishing
to shorten the hike may turn around at the waterfall/swimming
hole, halfway to the summit. Coordinators Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048
and John Hall, ph 377-5442.
-
- Aug 4 Sun 8AM WAI'ANAE KAI
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wai'anae)
Ascending this trail through mac nut trees into the upper reaches
of the slopes of Pu'u Ka'ala provides a pleasant day's workout.
Should we go to the cliffside? or meander the ridgeline? Only
your hike coordinator knows, so pay attention to the directions.
Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.
-
- Aug 10 Sat 8AM LIKEKE
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane'ohe)
A "very varied" hike contouring the Ko'olau's with
views of Kane'ohe and Kailua. We'll pass through open areas with
large mango trees as well as hala, hau, and guava forests. We
might even look up and wave at the visitors at the Pali Look
Out as we near our lunch spot at Pali Falls. Bring mosquito repellent
and your camera! Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.
-
- Aug 11 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)
A wanderful ramble in an expansive valley with sundry streams
and tricky trails. Who knows what interesting feature awaits
at the next swimming hole! Follow the coordinator's admonitions
to avoid embarassing digressions from the one true way, or heart-wrenching
separation from your comrades. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.
-
- Aug 17 Sat 8AM HALAPEPE NUI
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Pearl City)
A fairly easy, rambling loop hike, not much up and down, with
spectacular views of Pearl Harbor and the upper Waimano watershed.
One of our newer hikes. Much uluhe - long pants desirable.
Many junctions - plan to stay with the group. Coordinator John
Hall, ph 377-5442.
-
- Aug 18 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Manoa)
First you hike to the second peak; then you hike to the first
peak. You've got two feet, he's got three thousand feet. Once
you're at the top, there's no place to go but back down. A forgettable
hike you will long remember. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492
and Jay Feldman, ph 842-9596.
-
- Aug 24 Sat 7AM HAU'ULA LOA
MEMBERS ONLY; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED; LIMIT OF 15
PARTICIPANTS SCREENED BY THE HIKE COORDINATOR
Translated from Hawaiian, Kulia i ka nu'u means "to strive
for the summit." And that's what we'll do as we make our
way along what one HTMC veteran has christened "the longest
ridge on O'ahu." Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 247-2656 or
email turner@hawaii.edu
-

Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

BACKPACK
(RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 10, PARTICIPANTS SCREENED AND
APPROVED BY TRIP COORDINATOR)
(18 Mi/Intermediate/Shoreline/Kohala Coast of Big Island)
Attention newbie backpackers. Here it is, the chance to move
up to the next level. Do black sand beaches, myriad streams and
gulches, cool swimming holes and roaring waterfalls interest
you? If so, then give Paka a call to reserve your spot. We will
arrive Big Isle Friday afternoon, overnight at Kalopa cabins,
then hit the trail Saturday morning. Coordinator Patrick Rorie,
ph 676-2748.
-
- Aug 31 Sat 8AM KAMANAIKI
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Kalihi)
A steady climb above Kalihi Valley leads to a lookout in the
shadow of Lanihuli. If the coordinators and trail maintenance
crew get ambitious, we may loop into the small valley on the
right. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.

- Sep 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U KEAHI
A KAHOE
No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info
(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)
Pu'u K is perhaps the finest loop hike on the island. A long
valley walk leads to a zigzag cliff scramble, then a summit tightrope,
and finally a middle ridge descent. Along the upper sections
are some superb native plants. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.
-
- Sep 7 Sat 8AM KEALIA
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokule'ia)
Switchbacks, gliders, butterflies, yes, yes, yes, but Steve has
much more exciting options planned for us today. Be sure to follow
his instructions. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.
-
- Sep 8 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE
(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)
After a brief hiatus, we've found a new access (check with coordinator)
and will once again be tramping this long beautiful contour trail.
It parallels Halawa Valley to the Ko'olau summit, where our
reward is a breathtaking panoramic view of Ha'iku Valley and
Kane'ohe Bay. Sorry, returning on the H-3 freeway is not an option.
Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 595-6363.
-
- Sep 15 Sun 8AM WAIMALU UKA LOOP
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Waimalu)
A roller coaster ride in with a gentle grade to take you out.
A ditch hike that turns into a ridge hike that doesn't take you
to a summit but instead entertains you with an array of native
flora with shady koa oases scattered through fields of uluhe.
Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.
-
- Sep 21 Sat 6:30PM KA'IWA RIDGE
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)
We'll trek this evening trail
By the argent light of Mz. Moon
Up the gentle ridgy path
We'll reach the top, and soon
Moonlit scenes before us lie
Sea and coast and spread below
Against the darkening sky
Down again, the trail we go
P.S. Bring a flashlight. Coordinator Carole Moon, ph 596-4864.

'OHULEHULE
No Meeting @ Palace - Call Coordinator for Rendezvous Info
(8 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)
'Ohulehule (joining of waves hill) is the craggy peak that dominates
the windward coast from Kahalu'u to Punalu'u. Don't be fooled
by the pleasant valley stroll in the beginning. This hike requires
a sustained steep climb to the summit, but it's worth all the
effort, for the view from the top is one of the finest on O'ahu.
Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.
-
- Sep 28 Sat 5:00PM, CLUBHOUSE BARBEQUE
/ SLIDE SHOW
5:00 pm - Barbeque / Potluck
7:00 pm - Slide Show on Conservation Issues by Joby Roher
from the Army Environmental Branch and Mike Leech from the Invasive
Plants Committee
Come on down to our Waimanalo beach house for a barbecue/potluck
with your hiking buddies. For the evening's slide show, Joby
Roher and Mike Leech will discuss pressing conservation concerns
facing Hawai'i and the invasive species that threaten our unique
ecosystems. Call Bev Valentino at 595-6363 or email her at "bevvalentino@aol.com"
to let us know what dish you'll be bringing to the potluck or
whether you'll be contributing $7 towards the food. Non-members
pay an additional $2 to attend.
-
- Sep 29 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA'U GULCH
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hau'ula)
Hazards: Flash Flood; Rockfall; Slippery Rocks
A long way to go just for a swim but getting there is most of
the fun. We criss-cross Kaipapa'u Stream and meander past
rock dikes and through dense rain forest to reach the scenic
waterfall and plunge pool. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.
-
- Oct 5 Sat 8AM WAIMANO TUNNELS
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Pearl City)
After a lovely valley stroll, we go underground through two short,
but dark ditch tunnels built in 1912. Those without flashlights
may be in for some hard knocks and wet feet. Coordinator Steve
Brown, ph 247-8845.

Tired of hiking the Kuli'ou'ou State trail? Here's a variation.
We'll circumnavigate the valley, going up the ridge on one side,
traversing the narrow Ko'olau Summit (use caution) and descending
the opposite ridge. Will it be clockwise or counterclockwise
this year? Only the coordinator knows. Coordinator Tom Anderson,
ph 922-9675.
