A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules. We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars. Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times. Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes. Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes. Apr 6 Sat 8AM KAUNALA (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu) A pleasant hike on a shady contour trail. For the botanically inclined, there are some uncommon natives on this trail. Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419. Apr 21 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus) A true mix of trails to test your skills and delight the adventuresome. This combo of wide paths and narrow trails, ridges, valleys, roads and waterfalls in the Tantalus area is truly tantalizing. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330. Apr 27 Sat 8AM 'AIEA LOOP (4 Mi/Novice/Contour/'Aiea) A delightful journey through a eucalyptus, Cook pine and strawberry guava forest. A wide trail with views of the Waianaes, H-3 and Pearl Harbor. Be sure to look for the crashed airplane from WWII. If rainy, it could be muddy, otherwise a very enjoyable and relatively easy hike for all. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506. Apr 28 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY 'AKALA HOLO HOLO (10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waialua) Reach for the heights as we climb the tallest peak on O'ahu! Going from sea level to 4025 feet, the trail is moderate to VERY steep and narrow. The summit may afford us grand views, or it may be engulfed in clouds...it's always a tossup. May 4 Sat 5:30PM, Clubhouse BARBEQUE / SLIDE SHOW 5:30 pm - Barbeque / Potluck 7:30 pm - Slide Show -- Fred & John's Big Island Adventure in North Kohala Party with your trail buddies in a potluck/barbeque at our Waimanalo clubhouse. The evening's slideshow will feature Fred Dodge and John Hall who will recount their 8-day backpacking adventure in the wild mountains of North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii. May 5 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KALENA (7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield) A heart thumping hike with fantastic views of the Wai'anae coastline and views of the Ko'olau mountains. May 12 Sun 8AM WAHIAWA HILLS (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wahiawa) Adventure! We ford a couple of streams, slosh through mud (probably), avoid getting lost (hopefully) by following the coordinator and looking carefully for the ribbons, and have a chance to swim in a deep stream pool before climbing across one ridge and up another as we loop back to the starting point. Koko Head, then down to the May 19 Sun 8AM MANANA (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades) This long ridge route starts as a wide, grassy path and finishes as a narrow, muddy track. In between are endless ups and downs and some intriguing native plants and birds. Don't pay too much attention to the white mileage markers. May 26 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina) Not far to the trailhead, a good workout, great views, a summit crossing, and we end up back where we started. What could be better? Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 595-6363. Jun 1 Sat 8AM KALUANUI RIDGE (4 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Hawaii Kai) The shortest route to the Ko'olau summit and now legal to hike!! Jun 1 Sat 5:30 PM, Clubhouse BARBEQUE / SLIDE SHOW 5:30 pm - Barbeque / Potluck 7:30 pm - Slide Show on Hawaiian Plants by Kost Pankiwskyj Spend a relaxing afternoon sunbathing on Waimanalo beach, lounging at the clubhouse and barbequing your favorite recipes over a smoky kiawe fire. As the highlight of the evening, Kost Pankiwskyj will provide a slide show of Hawaiian plants one may encounter on the trail. Jun 2 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PAPALI UKA (7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Hau'ula) A State trail stroll turns into a wild, windy walk above Sacred Falls. Our goal is a small saddle, once known as "the pig wire". Here in 1934 Forester Charley Judd and CCC Foreman Ernest Landgraf determined the route of the Castle Trail to the summit. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691. Jun 9 Sun 8AM TRIPLER (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua) August 15, 1999 was the last time the club did this trail. We decided it was time to resurrect this hike. This long and grueling hike on a ridge that separates Moanalua and Kamanaiki valleys will give you a great workout. Listen to the hike coordinators' instructions carefully, as we HAVE A NEW ROUTE. A cobblestone path leads to a beautiful forest with giant bird's-nest ferns. We cross the top of a waterfall and continue to a water tunnel.Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845. Jun 22 Sat 8AM KOLOA KAI (3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie) A good gulch and ridge hike with a fabulous view of the La'ie coastline. Jun 23 Sun 8AM MOKULE'IA (8 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Waialua) Built in 1934 by the CCC, Mokule'ia returns to the schedule after a long hiatus. This pleasant graded trail will take us from pastureland, through dryland forest, ending at a wonderful overlook of undeveloped Makua Valley. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387. Jun 29 Sat 8AM WAIAU (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau) Only three years removed from "unfinished" status, Waiau is still rather raw, but it provides an excellent workout through some of the loveliest native flora on O'ahu and ends on the Ko'olau summit at a superb overlook of verdant Waihe'e Valley.Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748. Jun 30 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA POOLS (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La'ie) A long hot uphill trudge brings the pleasant reward of a cool forest stream with two photogenic waterfalls with inviting plunge pools. Soak your tired feet, or bring along your swimsuit for a chilly dip. The REALLY hardy may even push on to the summit. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048. Jul 7 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE (9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa) Army engineers built this contoured route in the 1920s. The trail has seen better days, but it remains the premier route to the central Ko'olau summit. Below the trail are pocket gulches with magnificent 'ohi'a trees and native birds.
