A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules. We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars. Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times. Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes. Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes. Jan 1 Tue 8AM KOKO CRATER (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai) Start the New Year right with a steep climb of this volcanic cone, once known as Kohelepelepe (the traveling vagina). Follow in the footsteps of the pig god Kamapuaa who forsook the fiery Pele for this enticing spot. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442. Jan 6 Sun 8AM LANIPO (7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki) This trail has roller coaster ups and downs, but somehow, they feel mostly like ups (??). It climbs a slippery ridge to the top of the Koolaus, for great views of the Windward side (clouds permitting), and even a peek into Kaau Crater along the way. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206. Jan 13 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KOOLAU SURPRISE (4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapuu) Steep drop offs and spectacular views make this a favorite for the brave and strong. Bring plenty of water. Jan 19 Sat 7AM PUU O HULU (4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Maili) A steep, rocky scramble leads to several concrete bunkers where observers sighted targets for the coastal artillery battery in Kapolei. Jan 20 sun 8AM MANANA DITCH (8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades) A stiff, cross country tramp leads to an abandoned ditch, built in the late 1800s. Jan 27 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY WAIANAE-KAALA (5 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae) Lets get high! Hike up to the highest point on Oahu. Feb 2 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY LULUMAHU (3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Nuuanu) In the ruins of an ancient heiau sits the remains of King Kamehameha IVs summer house. Feb 3 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus) Many trails criss-cross the Makiki Tantalus area, and our hike coordinator will lead us on an interconnected maze for an adventurous loop hike. Pay attention to trail crossings and ribbons. Coordinator Sandy Klein, ph 235-8330. Feb 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN (12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi) Named after Army Colonel Donald S. Bowman, Commander of Fort Shafter during World War I, HTMC has hiked this difficult ungraded ridge annually since the 1920's, longer than any other trail on Oahu. Feb 16-18, Sat-Mon MOKULEIA CAMPOUT RESERVATIONS REQUIRED; LIMIT OF 15 (8 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Waialua) At 1900 feet, the Mokuleia Campsite/Makua Rim region of the Waianae Mountains won't exactly blow the gauge on the altimeter. But come Spring, when the air turns a nippy 60 degrees, the sunsets are sensually colored, and the nite sky is star-filled for constellation viewing, this place will blow your mind! Feb 16 Sat 8AM AHUIMANU FAMILY HIKE (2 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahaluu) This pleasant stroll in the Temple Valley area offers some interpretive plaques describing the area, and stream hopping for the light-of-foot. Feb 17 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU KAAUMAKUA (11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane) It begins with a long dirt road walk, but beyond the road is an exceptional trail, leading to a Koolau peak named "family deity hill", where the hiker is rewarded with an awesome panorama of lush, undeveloped valleys. Feb 24 Sun 8AM WAIMANO (14 Mi/Advanced/Contour/Pearl City) This delightful trail, built by the CCC in the 1930s, is one of the longest in our inventory, but it is so nicely graded and contoured that the miles just seem to fly by as you practically STROLL to the Koolau summit (and return). Mar 2 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PALEHUA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15 (2 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Makakilo) Portions of our route pass through areas with sensitive ecosystems, hence our need to limit the number of hikers, thereby reducing the impact to the area. Mar 3 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA KST LOOP (11 Mi/Intermediate/ Ridge-Valley/Laie) A variation of an old hike that offers some new twists. A roller coaster ridge to climb, a new shortcut to the summit, a section of the Koolau Summit Trail to hike, and on the way down, if there's time, a swimming hole to cool off in. Mar 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY - GODEK/JASKULSKI RIDGE (11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua) By reprising one section of last quarter's Super Hike, we reopen to the club a ridge pioneered many years ago by HTMC legends Chuck Godek and Erwin "Ski Poles" Jaskulski. Mar 17 Sun 8AM KULEPEAMOA RIDGE (6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley) This hike requires the fearless sure-footedness of a mountain goat, the flypaper tenacity of an opihi, the acrobatic agility of a monkey, as you climb the steep and narrow ridge, cross the razor thin summit, and swing from tree to tree on the descent. Coordinator Ralph Valentino, ph 595-6363. Mar 23 Sat 8AM WAIMANO POOL (3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Pacific Palisades) What goes down must come up! Its easy getting down to this delightful swimming hole and waterfall. Enjoy it! The climb back to reality is somethinelse--a real test of endurance and stamina. Take it easy and pace yourself. Mar 24 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAAU CRATER (6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo) Back after a brief hiatus, this hike has it all: lush vegetation, swimming hole, waterfalls, fascinating crater, and a superb open ridge walk along the Koolau summit, featuring outstanding views of Honolulu and Windward Oahu. The prize? A chance to climb a steep ridge to the Koolau crest and battle along a not often hiked section of the Koolau Summit Trail. Apr 6 Sat 8AM KAUNALA (6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu) A pleasant hike on a shady contour trail. For the botanically inclined, there are some uncommon natives on this trail. Apr 7 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING (0.1 Mi/Novice/Clubhouse/Waimanalo) Last year our president used the words "renaissance", "exciting", and "the future" during his inspirational speech to the membership.
