Jul 7 Sat 8AM KULI’OU’OU VALLEY

(4 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kuli’ou’ou)

Looking for a short rather easy hike? This is the one for you. A leisurely walk into this shaded trail is quite pleasant. It gets a little more difficult as we get farther on the trail, caution is advised on a portion of this trail. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735.

Jul 8 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAHEKILI
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Ka'a'awa)
Hazards: steep dropoffs
We climb a high peak behind Ka'a'awa, passing old WWII bunkers along the way. Lunch can be at the top of a waterfall or journey upstream where native hibiscus trees thrive. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Jul 14 Sat CLUBHOUSE WORKDAY
Join us for an enjoyable day near the beach. Come anytime you choose after 8 AM. If you feel like doing a little work, there is something for everyone, from light window washing and housecleaning to major pruning and ladder hoisting. There is always painting, so bring some old clothes. The Club will provide cold drinks and fruit. Please bring your own lunch, and feel free to bring something to share. Don't forget your swim suit.

Jul 15 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)
We made the smart decision last quarter to cancel this hike due to dangerous conditions resulting from rainfall. We'll try again, and may be rewarded with a mountain apple or two. Watch your step on the slippery rocks, and be aware of possible flash floods. Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.

Jul 21 Sat 8AM LUA'ALAEA
(2 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)
Only minutes from busy downtown, this rustic trail escapes into lush rainforest and serenely wanders among native plants and ancient water ditches, until eventually climbing uphill to a delightful little waterfall, which is far more secluded and tranquil than her nearby overvisited cousin, Manoa Falls. Coordinator Roy Kikuta, ph 623-2427.

Jul 22 Sun 8 AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Manoa)
True HTMers expect a challenge each Sunday so we'll start this hike from the back of Manoa Valley. Our goal is the twin peaks of the highest mountain in the Ko'olau Range. Usually, Konahuanui chooses to hide its strong masculine profile in a shroud of mist, but maybe we'll get lucky and see the family jewels in all their glory. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Jul 29 Sun 8AM KEALIA
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokule'ia)
Who says O'ahu isn't as beautiful as the neighbor islands? This hike will take you to the Makua Rim lookout, a truely awesome spot. In between is a good cardiovascular workout up the CCC switchback trail above Dillingham Airfield and a few dirt roads, featuring superb views of the north shore. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.

Aug 4 Sat 6:30PM KA'IWA RIDGE
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)
Join us on this evening ridge hike and enjoy the scenery and lights of Lanikai, Kailua, Waimanalo, Makapu'u and surrounding hills. Stay a while to experience the moon as it rises above the islands off Lanikai. Bring warm clothes and a flashlight. Coordinator Zon Owen, ph 597-8493.

Aug 5 Sun 8AM LA'IE / LA'IE POOLS
(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La'ie)

For those wanting a more strenuous workout, Mike will continue two more miles on the contour trail, to the summit. Coordinators Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048 and John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Aug 12 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PAUAO RIDGE
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)
You'll enjoy a good variety of native plants and perhaps spot 'apapane or 'i'iwi on this tough ungraded ridge hike to the upper slopes of massive Pu'u Pauao, the prominent Ko'olau peak between verdant Kahana and Punalu'u valleys. Return the way you came or take the Summit Trail to Waikane. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.

Aug 18 Sat 7:30PM Clubhouse, BEYOND THE MAKATEA WALLS: CAVING, LAMP FISHING, AND THE RHYTHMS OF DAILY LIFE ON ATIU, COOK ISLANDS by MOSHE RAPAPORT
Moshe Rapaport, author and editor of The Pacific Islands: Environment and Society (Bess Press 1999), has visited and worked in many remote Pacific Island locales. This presentation focuses on Atiu, in the Southern Cook Group, an island surrounded by a ring of taro swamps and elevated makatea reef walls. Bring a snack or pay $1 at the door.

Aug 19 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)
Lush Kahana is a wonderful hike to get away for a day, enjoy the workout, enjoy a dip in the stream, and enjoy the mosquitoes. Follow the hike instructions to stay on the route and avoid the many intersecting trails. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

Aug 25 Sat 8AM PU'U MA'ELI'ELI
(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Kahalu'u)
A rather short trail on a very small ridge, but the views of Kane'ohe Bay with all its sandbars, Chinaman's Hat, Coconut Island and Pu'u Kanehoalani are a camera buff's delight. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Aug 26 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU'U KEAHI A KAHOE
(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)
You are allowed to climb Pu'u K only if you can pronounce its name correctly. Nah, nah, just kidding. Anyone who likes a lush valley, narrow ridges, and elusive views is welcome on this "wow" hike. Cook your lunch using the summit radar? Coordinators Kim & Judy Roy, ph 988-5372.

Sep 1 Sat 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU CAMPOUT/BACKPACK FOR NEWBIES
Camp on a ridge among the Norfolk pines, near swimming holes surrounded by lacy ferns and scented ginger flowers; pluck succulent mountain apples from trees as you day hike in the area; and view the panorama of Kaneohe Bay from an overlook as you night hike by moonlight. Sep 2 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane'ohe)
Ho'omaluhia Park is our starting point. A gradual slanted trail will connect with the Likeke Trail, a contour trail snaking along the Ko'olau mountain. A beautiful picturesque waterfall beneath the Pali Lookout is our destination. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.

This is not for the acrophobic. We cross several exposed dikes on this challenging hike. Weather permitting, we'll have some of the best views of the Wai'anae Coast and the rest of the island on this hike to the second highest peak on O'ahu. Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.
