Schedule of Hikes and Events for
April - May - June 2001

A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules.

We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars.

Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times.

Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes.

Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes.

(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)

It begins with a long dirt/gravel road walk, but beyond the road is an exceptional trail, leading to a Ko’olau peak named "family deity hill", where the hiker is rewarded with an awesome panorama of lush, undeveloped valleys. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Apr 7 Sat 8AM WAIMANO TUNNELS

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Pearl City)

Don't miss this variation on an old favorite. We descend into Waimano Valley and connect with the ditch trail. The highlight is a scramble through two tunnels, one long and straight, the other, short and twisting. Bring a flashlight, a hard head or hard hat. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735.

Featured in the big screen flicks GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE, GODZILLA, and MIGHTY JOE YOUNG, 'Ohulehule is a movie star. Hollywood loves this mountain and so will you! The hike begins as a lovely stroll in Kahana Valley, transitions to a tough climb along an ungraded ridge and climaxes at one of the finest panoramas on O’ahu. Apr 21 Sat 8AM SAND DUNE SHUFFLE FAMILY HIKE

(7 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Kahuku)

Bring your hat, sunscreen, and swimsuit and enjoy this lovely stroll along a remote north shore coastline. Enjoy a salty dip in a protected tide pool, scale the islands largest sand dunes, and view rare waterbirds. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)

Starting as a pleasantly wide grassy stroll, this trail soon becomes a steep narrow roller coaster, as long and grueling as the Marathon! From the summit you'll see Kahalu’u, but all you'll REALLY be looking for is the "finish line"...still 6 miles away! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pearl City)

We owe our thanks for Gerald Leao for this interesting new hike, which begins on one familiar trail and ends on another, with a long stretch of new, but easy walking in between. Plan to stay with the coordinator to avoid taking the wrong turn. There are many fine views along the way. No steep drop-offs and not much climbing involved, but we do end far from the beginning and will need cooperation in shuttling people back to their cars. (7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La’ie)

Hazards: slippery rocks, flash flood, rock fall. A little bit of ridge and a lotta stream lead to a short swim, a short climb, a big waterfall and a plunge pool. Look for native plants along the way and ‘o’opu and hihiwai in the stream. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596.

May 6 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi)

The difficulties of this long, dry, climb with many ups and downs will stimulate you to a higher achievement of mounting her summit at a wet, wild, and spectacular place accompanied by some narrow, hazardous sections.Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

May 12 Sat Clubhouse Barbecue/Potluck (5PM), Slide Show (7PM) - Peruvian Adventures. Arequipa, Cuzco, and the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu by Chris Walker and Eric and Huilin Richards

Chris, Eric, and Huilin will recount their visit to the Peruvian cities of Arequipa and Cuzco, capital of the Inca empire, and their 4-day adventure hiking the Inca Trail, which ascends to 13.000 feet in the Andes, to the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu, not discovered by Europeans until 1911. A trail along an abandoned irrigation ditch leads down to a lovely stream. The best swimming holes are at the second and eighth crossings. Watch your feet on the slippery rocks and your head in the hau tangles. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.

May 19 Sat 8AM HAU’ULA UKA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hau’ula)

We start on the Hau’ula Loop Trail but before long diverge and head mauka with Kaipapa’u Gulch below us. After lunch we descend a connecting ridge which takes us back to the Hau’ula Loop Trail and heading back to the starting point. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.

May 20 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou)

At the head of Kuli’ou’ou Valley is the flat-topped peak of Pu’u o Kona. This hike takes a roundabout, up-and-down route to its summit. Tired hikers can bail out down the State trail. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

(20 Mi/Masochist/Ridge/Pupukea to Waikane)

Special meeting time and place. Limit of 15 members only. Reservations required. Who's up for a little fun and adventure in the mud? Make your pack light and streamlined to keep your spirits high and your feet swift. Have no fear cuz Ralph is here, Ken is near and Grant is bringing up the rear. Lotsa trails, lotsa junctions, lotsa ways to get lost. Pay attention to the prescribed route on this woodsy jaunt in the hills and valleys behind Honolulu. Coordinator Sandy Klein, ph 235-8330.

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15

That rounded peak on the Waianae summit is our goal today, and man will we have some fun getting there! In order to reduce the negative impact and potential damage to this sensitive area, the number of hikers is limited to 15. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 488-1161.

Jun 3 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE

(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)

Schofield-Waikane is one of the great trans Ko’olau routes. It was opened up by the Army around 1915 and graded by the CCC in 1934. The side valleys are home to a remnant ‘i’iwi population. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Sat June 9 Clubhouse BARBEQUE/POTLUCK (5PM). SLIDE SHOW (7PM), WHERE THE TRAIL MEETS THE AIR: PARAGLIDING IN PARADISE by JON GOLDBERG-HILLER

This introduction to the sport of paragliding by experienced O’ahu paraglider pilots will include dreamy slides of mountain flying taken around the islands and the world. A brief discussion of the theory of portable flight and the equipment used by para-hikers will also be included. This billy goat hike features rock scrambling and edge hugging with panoramas of the Makapu’u Coast and Waimanalo Beach for eye relief. The Tom-Tom down trail will rubberize your knees. Coordinator Mike Mottl, ph 254-6360.

Jun 17 Sun 8AM WAI’ANAE KAI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Waianae)

This loop hike rambles around the back of Wai’anae Valley. Along the way are good patches of native dry-land forest and superb views of Makaha Valley. Watch for 2 key junctions. Miss the first, and you climb Ka’ala. Miss the second, and you are on top of Kawiwi. Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.

Jun 30 Sat 8AM (FAMILY) KAUKONAHUA STREAM FLOAT

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/ Wahiawa)

Bring your swim suit, river shoes and floatation device (boogie board, inner-tube, etc..) and hike to a lovely section of the longest river in the state. Float, scramble and float a half-mile down this tropical waterway and enjoy lunch at a quaint swimming hole. Kids welcome. Coordinators: Larry Oswald and Kris Corliss 638-7268

(4 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kuli’ou’ou)

Looking for a short rather easy hike? This is the one for you. A leisurely walk into this shaded trail is quite pleasant. It gets a little more difficult as we get farther on the trail, caution is advised on a portion of this trail. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735.
