A $2.00 donation is requested for each non-member, age 18 or over. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. For hikes, we meet at Iolani Palace, mountain side, at 8 AM unless otherwise noted. For trail maintenance, call Mabel Kekina, 488-0044. Please sign our release and abide by our rules. We do not arrange transportation. However, you are welcome to arrange your own. You are cautioned not to leave valuables in parked cars. Bring lunch and water on all hikes. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Extra caution may be required on some trails. You are responsible for yourself at all times. Keep trails and lunch sites free of litter; treat trees and plants with respect and care. ALWAYS be careful with fire, matches and cigarettes. Many of our hikes require special permission. For trails open to the public, refer to the State Forestry map. Firearms, pets, radios and other audio devices are prohibited on hikes. Jan 1 Mon 8AM KOKO CRATER (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawaii Kai) Hazards: steep drop offs; narrow sections. Start the new year and the "for real" new millenium with a good lung busting climb followed by a walk on the narrow crumbly crater rim. Live long and prosper. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459. Jan 6 Sat 8AM MAKAPUU POINT (2 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Makapuu) A short hike with a bit of climbing and spectacular views of Makapuu and the windward coast. With luck you can see Molokai, Lanai, the West Maui mountains and maybe a whale or two. There is also a blowhole and the tide pools. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735. Jan 7 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY WAIANAE-KAALA (5 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae) Ready to ascend lofty Mt. Kaala? This strenuous hike is steep with many drop offs so extreme caution is required. Youll have a hard time deciding whether to dawdle to view the native flora, or push on to the highest point on Oahu. The Kaala bog at the top is a botanist's delight. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691. Jan 14 Sun 8AM MOANALUA (10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua) Don't be fooled by the easy stroll along the Moanalua Valley carriage road. Check out the seventh stream crossing for the petroglyph boulder to your right. But the main hike starts farther in with umpteen stream crossings and hau bushes before you ascend to a saddle with a fabulous view of Haiku valley below your feet and a sweeping vista of the windward coast. Coordinators Judy & Kim Roy, ph 988-5372. Jan 20 Sat ULUPAU HEAD (1/2 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Mokapu) Join us on our annual pilgrimage to plumage as we view the baby booby birds. Jan 21 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY NIHOA GULCH RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15 (6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Mokuleia) This rocky scramble leads us on a new route above the Mokuleia coastal shelf to connect with the Kuokala Trail and the Kealia Trail. Extra caution is required in some places - dont trust them cables! Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387. Jan 27 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PALEHUA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15 (2 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Makakilo) Portions of our route pass through areas with sensitive ecosystems, hence our need to limit the number of hikers, thereby reducing the impact to the area. Jan 28 Sun 8AM KUAOKALA RESERVATIONS REQUIRED - LIMIT OF 30 (5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha) Most of the elevation is gained by car, then we start hiking near those mysterious "golf balls" above Yokohama Bay. The trail follows the Makua Valley rim, with breathtaking views of two coastlines, and a choice of relaxing lunch spots..so don't forget cameras and bentos! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048. Feb 3 Sat 5PM Clubhouse IRON CHEF COMPETITION & ECO-CHALLENGE MARATHON Show-off your culinary skills in an Iron Chef competition at the clubhouse! Three simultaneous competitions will be held on different themed-ingredients: (1) shrimp; (2) chicken; (3) vegetarian. HTMCs "stadium kitchen" is limited so you may have to bring your own cooking equipment or prepare your culinary masterpieces elsewhere. As part of the evenings entertainment, well be showing 4 hours worth of last years Eco-Challenge, a grueling 197 mile multisport endurance competition across Patagonia in southern Argentina which included hiking, mountaineering, glacier climbing, kayaking and horse-back riding. Feb 4 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE (14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa) Zoot suit up and zigzag a zillion miles along the best graded trail on Oahu, a haven for far-out native plants, and zone out with zwieback at the summit atop the H-3 tunnels. Feb 10 Sat 8AM KULIOUOU (4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou) This well maintained trail provides a pleasant hike and a good workout for those who push on to the summit. You may lunch at any cool forest spot that appeals to you. Out and back the same way. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377 -5442.Feb 11 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU (5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole) The backside of Waiahole Valley has a loop trail that meanders in the lush greenery, crossing Waianu stream and touching on the Waiahole Irrigation Ditch Trail as it heads toward Kahana Valley (but we won't go that far today). Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330. Feb 17 Sat 8AM NUUANU (4 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Hillside/Nuuanu) Enjoy the forest as you climb the Judd Trail to the Tantalus area. Then the Nuuanu Trail to the reservoir overlook. Out and back the same way. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 488-1161. Feb 17-19, Sat-Mon KUAOKALA CAMPOUT Backpack the woods, cliffs and ridges of the Kuaokala Trail to the tall Norfolk pines surrounding the lavish green meadows of the Peacock Flats Campground. Two pavilions, peacocks, and a peehouse are on site. Water is not available but will be brought in by the coordinator. Participants limited to 15. Coordinators Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691 and Carole K. Moon, ph 596-4864. Feb 18 Sun 8AM WAIMANO (14 Mi/Advanced/Contour/Pearl City) This is a long graded trail to the summit so bring lots of water, snacks, and determination. Out and back the same way. Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841. Feb 25 Sun 8AM MANANA DITCH (8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley -Ridge/Pacific Palisades)Now everyone stop ditchin about this hike! It has a challenging topographic workout, a shady stroll along an abandoned irrigation ditch, and a magnificent loop extension. What more (or less) could you want? Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380. Mar 3 Sat 8AM WAIMANO POOL (3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Pacific Palisades) The neighborhood kids know where to cool off on a hot day. Mar 4 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU O KILA (6 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana) Puu O Kila is the fifth and newest hike in Kahana Valley. Be prepared to get your feet blistered, your legs bit, your lungs busted, and your mind boggled on this tough stream-ridge loop. The views of the valley and the encircling mountains are hard to beat. Mar 10 Sat 8AM UPPER NUUANU HIKEABOUT MEMBERS ONLY; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15; PARTICIPANTS SCREENED AND APPROVED BY THE HIKE COORDINATOR (10 miles/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Nuuanu) For Super Hike XII, we'll climb the seven waterfalls of Hillebrand Glen on the way to a peak ancient Hawaiians called Swirling Heavens. The return route may be a surprise. Mar 17 Sat 8AM PALI FALLS (4 Mi/Novice/Graded Hillside/Nuuanu Pali) The Old Pali Road contours seaward from Pali Lookout and chops off just under Pali Highway. Continuing along brings us to the base of the lookout and a small refreshing waterfall just perfect for a lunch spot. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206. Mar 18 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PAPALI UKA (7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Hauula) As a result of the Sacred Falls tragedy, it's been almost three years since we've hiked this area. But a new route, featuring a wealth of native flora, penetrates deep into the windward Koolau Range, reaching the fabled Castle Trail and beautiful Kaluanui Stream. Mar 25 Sun 8AM KULEPEAMOA RIDGE (6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley) Hard breathing to soft needles, windswept ridge to clouds swept low, olapa flutter to loulu rustle, uguisu warble to el-e-pai-o. Mar 31 Sat 8AM KAWAEWAE (3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaneohe) We start in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Kaneohe with an easy hillside stroll, but the route quickly moves a bit beyond the "Novice" category. The views are great and provide a different perspective on Kaneohe and the Bay. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845. Apr 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PUU KAAUMAKUA (11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane) It begins with a long dirt/gravel road walk, but beyond the road is an exceptional trail, leading to a Koolau peak named "family deity hill", where the hiker is rewarded with an awesome panorama of lush, undeveloped valleys. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748. Apr 7 Sat 8AM WAIMANO TUNNELS (5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Pearl City) Don't miss this variation on an old favorite. We descend into Waimano Valley and connect with the ditch trail. The highlight is a scramble through two tunnels, one long and straight, the other, short and twisting. Bring a flashlight, a hard head or hard hat. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735. Apr 8 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING (HTMC Clubhouse/Waimanalo/Members Only) Your Voice and Vote are Needed!! Its time to take care of club business, review the past year and decide on the direction our club will take for the next year. Your Club needs volunteers to serve as: Committee members/chairpersons; Directors on the Board; Hike Coordinators. If you care about your club, then get involved with others who care. Come early to picnic and enjoy the beach.
