Oct 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U MANAMANA

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kaaawa)

Even experienced hikers get weak in the knees and speak of this hike in hushed tones. But if you are brave enough to climb the steep crumbly cliff and tightrope-walk across the dangerously thin ridges, you’ll be rewarded with spectacuar views! Then you’ll be so proud of your accomplishment that you’ll probably let out a roar like the Crouching Lion! Coordinator Ralph (the Lion) Valentino, ph 595-6363.

Oct 8 Sun 8AM MT. OLYMPUS

(6 Mi/ Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis Hts.)

A new rendezvous point and a new route are planned for today’s outing. You can count on clambering up and down numerous pu'us until you reach the blustery and scenic Ko’olau summit. Call for the rendezvous point if you’re not going to the palace. Coordinators Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596 and Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492.

Oct 14 Sat 8AM ‘AIEA BISECTUAL

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/’Aiea)

A good beginner’s hike. Starting at the top parking lot, we hike a short distace on the loop trail. At the paperbark forest, we head down the middle ridge, which takes us to a tunnel off to the side of the trail. Bring a flashlight. It is a mystery why the tunnel was dug out. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735.

Oct 15 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U KEAHI A KAHOE

(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)

Hikes don’t get any better than this superb ridge loop around the back of Moanalua valley. According to legend, Kahoe was a taro farmer in Ha’iku. The smoke from his cooking fire (keahi) always drifted to the top of the pali. Coordinators Judy & Kim Roy, ph 988-5372.

Oct 21 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY ‘AKALA HOLO HOLO, SPECIAL MEETING PLACE, RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, LIMITED TO 25

(10 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waialua)

Hazards: steep drop offs, narrow sections. Call Kris or Larry to reserve your spot on this classic north shore trek to the clouds. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Crawling On, Over and Around the Tepuis of Venezuela)

Share your favorite recipes with your hiking friends while seeing some of the latest hiking, backpacking, and camping gear at the HTMC clubhouse! Some of our hardcore enthusiasts will be displaying their equipment. If you have extra gear you no longer use, bring them down to the swap meet and offer good deals to your fellow members! To top-off the evening, Deetsie Chave will share her climbing adventures to the top of several tepui (sheer vertical table mountains that rise several thousand feet above the tropic rainforest in Southern Venezuela) and to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world which plunges 3,212 feet off a tepui to the jungle floor. Please call Lynn Agena at 696-5740 to tell us what you'll be bringing to the barbeque/potluck.

Oct 22 Sun 8AM WAHIAWA HILLS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wahiawa)

A winding loop trail, hiking up and down numerous ridges, maneuvering several stream crossings, with an added bonus of having your lunch at a great swimming hole for dinny skipping in Kaukonahua Stream. Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.

Oct 29 Sun 8AM WAIAU

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waiau)

Wanna challenge? Then take this tough ungraded ridge trail all the way to the Ko'olau summit, and count yourself among the few, the proud, the exhausted that have done so. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.

Nov 4 Sat WOMEN ONLY MALAEKAHANA LOOP

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La’ie)

We’re not kidding - no men are allowed on this first-time event for HTMC - a hike exclusively for the distaff side of the hiking community! The location is between La’ie Trail and Malaekahana Ridge. A leisurely pace is advised going upstream (rock hopping). After lunch, a short uphill climb through a roseapple forest takes us on a ridge heading back to our cars. Coordinator Joyce Tomlinson, ph 674-1459.

Nov 5 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA’U GULCH

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Hauula)

Yes, it’s a long way just to swim under a cold waterfall, but getting there is half the fun. The journey will criss-cross Kaipapa’u Stream over slippery rocks, meander through dense rain forest, and wind past rock dikes. Be alert to flash flood conditions. Coordinator Ralph (the Flash) Valentino, ph 595-6363.

Nov 11 Sat 8AM PUPUKEA SUMMIT

(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Pupukea)

A good introduction to the historic Ko'olau Summit Trail, Pupukea Summit offers a nice vista of Kahuku with some mud and lots of guava thrown in. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.

Nov 12 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KALENA

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield)

We hike heavenward, across the straight and narrow dike to our final reward: an onolicious lunch with a fabulous island view. Extra caution is required in some spots. Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.

Nov 17 Fri 7PM MEMBERS ONLY WAIMEA BOTANICAL TOUR; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 25

Join us for a guided botanical tour in Waimea Valley to see rare and endangered Hawaiian plants and others. A $10 donation is requested to support the Waimea Arboretum Foundation. Bring a flashlight. Contact Larry Oswald or Kris Corliss at 638-7268 to sign up.

Nov 18 Sat 7:00AM KAWIWI/KA’ALA/BEYOND SUPER HIKE

MEMBERS ONLY; RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15;

PARTICIPANTS SCREENED AND APPROVED BY THE HIKE COORDINATOR

(12 miles/Advanced/Ridge/Wai’anae-Waialua)

Few hikers have scaled Pu’u Kawiwi, the mysterious peak in upper Wai’anae Valley. Fewer still have climbed Kawiwi, negotiated the razor dikes to No Name Peak, and continued on to Mauna Ka’ala, the apex of O’ahu. Even fewer still have done Kawiwi, then Ka’ala, then emerged on O’ahu's North Shore. If all goes as planned, we'll accomplish all this on the Saturday before Thanksgiving 2000. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 247-2656 or email turner@hawaii.edu

Nov 19 Sun 8AM LANIPO

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki)

This is another of those roller coaster ridge trails which tests your stamina. If you pass the test, you're rewarded with glimpses of the Ka'au Crater on the way up, and then with A+ views from the summit of the Ko'olaus. But save some of that stamina for a big uphill climb on the return trip, that's the final exam! Coordinator Jim Pushaw, ph 487-6798.

Nov 23 Thurs 11AM, Clubhouse--Thanksgiving Lunch

Join your hiking buddies for a Thanksgiving Lunch at the clubhouse! Lynn Agena will cook the turkey--you need to bring the trimmins, fixins, and other dishes to the potluck. The Thanksgiving feast will start at noon, so come early to gab before gobbling. Be sure to call Lynn at 685-1764 to reserve a spot and to insure that we don't end up with all pumpkin pies. To add a little variety to our event, club member Steve Haus will unveil his new book on gardeing and share his experiencs making the book.

Nov 26 Sun 8AM LA’IE

(10 Mi/Advanced/Graded Ridge/La’ie)

Two hikes in one! We all start on a hot dirt road which turns into a graded trail. Those who want a milder hike can stop halfway up it at a cool swimming hole with a waterfall. Hardier hikers who want more of a challenge can continue all the way to the Ko'olau summit, and then look forward to their cool dip on the return trip. Coordinators Mike Algiers ph 422-1048 and John Hall.

Dec 2 Sat 8AM KA’ENA POINT FAMILY HIKE (Natural Area Reserve)

(4 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Kaena)

Kaena Point, the westernmost point on O’ahu, is the site of one of the last intact dune ecosystems in the main Hawaiian Islands. ‘Ohai, naupaka kahakai, ‘ilima papa, pa’uo-Hi’iaka, m’ao, Kaena ‘akoko, hinahina, pohinahina, and nehe are the shoreline plants you will see. Hawaiian monk seal, Laysan albatross, turtles, and whales frequent this area. A hat and lots of water are recommended, as it gets really hot on a clear day. Coordinators Phil Booth, ph 627-1693 and Roy Kikuta.

Dec 3 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY THREE CORNERS

(8 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Mokuleia)

This hike begins with a road walk and there's a fence on the Makua Rim, but the woodsy stroll in the middle through dry-land forest and the excellent panorama at the end, of Mount Ka'ala, Makaha and Makua Valleys, as well as O'ahu's north shore make it all worthwhile. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Dec 9 Sat 9AM PLEASE KOKUA--HTMC Workday at Clubhouse

We need your help painting the clubhouse, performing yard-work/landscaping, and generally sprucing up the clubhouse for the holidays. We'll be holding the work day prior to the Christmas Party/BBQ/Slide Show that will be held at 5 PM. Please lend a hand if you can. We'll be needing a few ladders (8 ft or greater), paint scrappers, and yard equipment. Also be sure to wear work clothes. Please send email to Nathan Yuen at nyuen@lava.net to let us know if you can help that day. Thank you.

Dec 9 Sat 5PM, Clubhouse, CHRISTMAS PARTY/SLIDE SHOW

Celebrate the holidays with your trail compadres in a potluck/barbeque Christmas party at the clubhouse! Bring a small grab bag gift (no more than $5) to share with your fellow club members. Please also bring $2 to see a slideshow by Audrey Sutherland, a world traveler who has kayaked to many destiantions on the globe. Audrey will share her kayaking experiences on the water which are chronicled in her two books, "Paddling My Own Canoe," and "Paddling Hawaii." Be sure to call Lynn at 685-1764 to tell us what you're bringing to the Christmas party.

Dec 10 Sun 8AM KAUNALA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu)

Some forest trail hiking, some dirt-road strolling will make this pleasant Ko’olau foothills jaunt appeal to the pedestrian in us all. Mind the ribbons to insure picking the correct route for a safe return. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

Dec 16 Sat 8AM KAMANAIKI

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Kalihi)

A steady climb above Kalihi Valley leads to a lookout in the shadow of Lanihuli. If the leader (and the trail tenders) get ambitious, we may loop into the small valley on the right. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.

Dec 17 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAMAILE’UNU

(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Waianae)

Possibly the toughest hike on our schedule, this one will take you up a rough rocky ridge with lots of scrambling, lots of sun, and hardly any shade. So bring your hats, lots of water, and sunscreen! If you finish this one, you're allowed to brag! Coordinator Arnold Fujioka ph 625-9431

Dec 24 Sun 8AM OLOMANA

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Olomana)

What is so irresistable about Olomana? Is it the towering crag of the first peak or the terror of the third? Or maybe the fabulous panoramic view from Makapu’u to Mokoli’i? Whatever -- it is our traditional Christmas hike, that’s a good enough reason to hike it. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Dec 31 Sun 7AM PU’U HELEAKALA

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Nanakuli)

Do a Jason Sunada on this hike: bring an umbrella! This hike calls for lots of water, a covering for your head, and sun block for your skin because it is a blazing hot, barren, broad ridge with low shrubbery everyshere. The views of Nanakuli and the coastline are fantastic! Coordinator Fred Dodge, ph 696-4677.

Jan 1 Mon 8AM KOKO CRATER

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai’i Kai)

Hazards: steep drop offs; narrow sections. Start the new year and the "for real" new millenium with a good lung busting climb followed by a walk on the narrow crumbly crater rim. Live long and prosper. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.

Jan 7 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY WAI’ANAE-KA’ALA

(5 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wai’anae)

Ready to ascend lofty Mt. Ka’ala? This strenuous hike is steep with many drop offs so extreme caution is required. You’ll have a hard time deciding whether to dawdle to view the native flora, or push on to the highest point on O’ahu. The Ka’ala bog at the top is a botanist's delight. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.
