Jul 1 Sat 8AM LIKEKE

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane’ohe)

The trail maintenance crew was successful in rerouting the access trail to avoid walking along Likelike Hwy to Wilson Tunnel. The access trail now slants its way to Likeke Trail. A contour trail following the base of the Ko’olau leads us to the Pali Falls. After lunch at the falls, we continue on the trail to the Pali golf course road returning to Ho’omaluhia Park via the east gate of the park. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.

Jul 2 Sun 8AM KAHANA VALLEY

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)

This lush windward valley fulfills its promise of green forests, rambling trails and sparkling streams. Follow the directions and the ribbons so it doesn’t fulfill a promise of lost hikers! Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.

PLEASE KOKUA--HTMC WORK DAY (1 pm on July 8th)

We need your help to dig a trench from the street to the HTMC clubhouse for a new water pipe. We also plan to paint some trouble spots and prune some trees at 1 pm on July 8th--before the BBQ/Slide Show that will be held at 5:30 pm. Please lend a hand if you can. With sufficient manpower, we can complete these tasks in but a mere few hours. We'll be needing shovels, a few ladders (8 ft or greater), paint scrapers, and pruning equipment. Also be sure to wear work clothes. Please send e-mail, nyuen@lava.net, to let Nathan know if you can help us perform these tasks. Thank you.

Jul 8 Sat 5:30 PM, BARBEQUE / SLIDE SHOW -- BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

5:30 pm - Barbeque / Potluck

7:30 pm - Slide Show by Don Piburn and Janice Nako-Piburn: Traveling and Day Hikes in British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies

Join your hiking buddies for a potluck and slide show at the HTMC clubhouse in Waimanalo! Everyone should bring something to barbeque or a pot luck dish. As the climax of the evening, Don Piburn and Janice Nako-Piburn will recount their travel and day hike adventures in British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies! Be sure to call Lynn Agena at 696-5740 to tell us what you'll be bringing.

Jul 9 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KONAHUANUI

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Manoa)

Hazards: steep muddy sections to negotiate.

Konahuanui is the name given to the large double humps above Nu’uanu. Often shrouded in clouds, they are the highest peaks on the Ko’olau range and today we climb them! Get your lungs and legs ready cuz here we go! Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.

Jul 15 Sat 6:30PM KA’IWA RIDGE

(3 Mi/Novice/Ridge/Lanikai)

If a dusty night-time scramble appeals to you, then have we got a hike for you! Bring flashlights and use caution near the steep drop-offs. Weather permitting, we may be rewarded with a wonderful celestial event. Meet at Kailua Beach Park opposite Buzz’s Steak House. Coordinator Joyce Tomlinson, ph 674-1459.

Jul 16 Sun 8AM KEALIA

(7 Mi/Intermediate/Graded Hillside/Mokule’ia)

Scramble with us up the switchback trail criss-crossing the cliff face up to the plateau above Dillingham Airfield. Hence we journey the network of trails and hopefully return whence we came. Coordinator Roy Kikuta, ph 623-2427.

Jul 23 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAAU CRATER

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Steep Valley-Ridge/Palolo)

This loop hike circumnavigates a natural water-filled crater nestled in the bosom of the Koolau summit, whose overflow forms a cascading waterfall, a remarkable natural phemonenon. Coordinators Kim & Judy Roy, ph 988-5372.

Jul 23 Sun 1PM MEMBERS ONLY WAIHE’E VALLEY RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 30 SPECIAL MEETING PLACE

(3 Mi/Novice/Valley/Kahaluu)

There’s a limit of 30 hikers, so sign up early with the coordinator. By the courtesy of the Board of Water Supply, we are allowed to visit their hole in the hill, which ends at a water-bearing rock face. Learn the interesting story of Oahu’s water sources. Bring flashlights and plan on your footwear getting wet (along with most of the rest of you). Bring a container to fill with some of the purest water you’ll ever drink. An extended steeper hike up to Hamama Falls is included. Coordinator Justin Ohara, ph 946-2735.

Jul 30 Sun 8AM WAIMALU DITCH

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Waimalu)

An abandoned ditch trail leads to several good swimming holes. The best two are at the second and eighth stream crossings. On the way you may find some ripe mountain apples. Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.

Aug 5 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KOOLAU SURPRISE

(4 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Makapu’u)

Absolutely not for those with acrophobia. This hike is a lung busting leg cramping workout. The views are world class. Warning: do not view and hike at the same time or it may be your last cavalier act. Coordinator Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.

Aug 6 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PAUAO RIDGE

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)

How do you pronounce it? Pa-WOW or Pa-o-UH-OH?! Depends on which option you choose. You can either follow Paka as he takes the group from the normal terminus of the hike along the Ko’olau Summit Trail and down Waikane, or return the way you came. This windward Ko’olau ridge separates Punalu’u and Kahana Valleys and provides exquisite views of both. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.

Aug 12 Sat 8AM KOLOA KAIPAPA’U

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hau’ula)

A new variation of this hike will be offered this year. Starting on the Koloa ridge we will drop down into A’akaki’i Gulch and head mauka until we reach a ridge we have not been on in the past. Climbing this ridge and hiking along the ridge, we will connect with another ridge taking us to the Kaipapa’u ridge. The new route will make this hike a little more of a challenge. Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.

Aug 13 Sun 8AM WAILUPE LOOP

(6Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Aina Haina)

Cooped up all week? Why not loop the loop? This tough valley-ridge combo will leave you pleasantly pooped. Coordinators Wil Kawano, ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596.

Some of our hardcore enthusiasts will be displaying their equipment. If you have extra gear you no longer use, bring them down to the swap meet and offer good deals to your fellow members! To top-off the evening, Deetsie Chave will share her climbing adventures to the top of several tepui (sheer vertical table mountains that rise several thousand feet above the tropic rainforest in Southern Venezuela) and to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world which plunges 3,212 feet off a tepui to the jungle floor. Please call Lynn Agena at 696-5740 to tell us what you'll be bringing to the barbeque/potluck.

Aug 20 Sun 8AM ‘AIEA RIDGE

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/’Aiea)

You laze long the ‘Aiea Loop Trail to its midpoint where the true ridge trail begins. A mix of graded and up/down sections provide plenty of variety as you approach the splendid view from the Ko’olau Summit (weather permitting). Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.

Aug 26 Sat 7:30AM MEMBERS ONLY WAHIAWA NUI SUPER HIKE

HIKE RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15; PARTICIPANTS

SCREENED AND APPROVED BY THE HIKE COORDINATOR

(15 miles/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa-Northern Koolaus)

"California, here we come," is what we'll be singing on this hike. No, we're not heading for the land of Hollywood. Instead, this mega-trek will begin and end on California Avenue in Wahiawa Heights, and include several stream crossings, a ramble through the foothills, a righteous stretch along the Koolau crest, and a final rollercoaster ride back to civilization. Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 455-0414 or email turner@hawaii.edu

Aug 27 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY BOWMAN

(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kalihi)

Loosen your belts for the long, lung busting ascent to the summit; tighten your laces for the long, downhill trek back to your cars. This trail tests your perserverence with a resounding YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS! Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.

Sep 3 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KO’OLAU REPRISE RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 30

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/’Alewa Hts.)

We have another opportunity to hike this pleasant woodsy loop. Reserve early to ensure your spot. Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.

Sep 9 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY LULUMAHU

(3 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Nu’uanu)

In the ruins of an ancient heiau sits the remains of King Kamehameha IV’s summer house. A bronze plaque describing the significance of this site in Hawaiian history was installed in 1950. We will hike thru bamboo, paperbark, and rose apple forests. Lulumahu Falls is hidden in a niche in the forest. A rather short hike, but a most enjoyable walk. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.

Sep 10 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY KAHEKILI

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kaaawa)

It looks impossible, but, believe it or not, there is a trail that goes up the steep ridge. Caution is advised, for there are narrow sections with steep drop-offs. A waterfall with small pools is at the top. Coordinators Kris Corliss and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

Sep 16 Sat 6PM Clubhouse APPRECIATION NIGHT

Our annual Mahalo evening to honor the trail maintenance crew, hike coordinators, directors and committee members is our way of expressing our appreciation for all their kokua. The form of our appreciation is round, flat, and smells great. Get involved and you too may be rewarded with free pizza! Attendance is by invitation only.

Sep 17 Sun 8AM PAUOA WOODS

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/Tantalus)

Variety is the theme of this hike. Native forest ridge melds into a contour along a pipeline as we cross a stream enroute through a ti grove and onto the Manoa Cliff Trail. Pay attention to the ribbons and stay on the correct trail. Coordinator Doug Klein, ph 235-8330.

Sep 23 Sat 8AM KALAUAO

(5 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Aiea)

Tired of doing the same old ‘Aiea Loop Trail? Well here’s a variation which will take you down to the stream, and lead you to a pool with a pretty waterfall. But be prepared for a steep trail down, numerous stream crossings, and a return trip which will give your legs and lungs a nice workout. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 627-1693.

Sep 24 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U O KONA

(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kuliouou)

This meandering hike is all over the map. The loop route will intimately acquaint you with 4 ridges, 2 valleys, and one flat-topped pu’u. An early exit is available for those with tired legs or pressing appointments. Coordinator Jim Pushaw, ph 487-6798.

Oct 1 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY PU’U MANAMANA

(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Kaaawa)

Even experienced hikers get weak in the knees and speak of this hike in hushed tones. But if you are brave enough to climb the steep crumbly cliff and tightrope-walk across the dangerously thin ridges, you’ll be rewarded with spectacuar views! Then you’ll be so proud of your accomplishment that you’ll probably let out a roar like the Crouching Lion! Coordinator Ralph (the Lion) Valentino, ph 595-6363.
