Apr 1 Sat 8AM LUA'ALAEA
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)
Join us and take the off ramp from the Manoa Falls freeway to
this lush and secluded waterfall visited by few, except us and
the pigs. Watch for the native plants and be careful not to get
stepped on by the mule's foot ferns. A bit of an uphill climb
is all the admission that's required to pay for the privilege
of your sojourn at this pristine spot. Coordinator Steve Brown,
ph 247-8845.
Apr 2 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING
(0.1 Mi/Novice/Clubhouse/Waimanalo)
Come on down to Waimanalo and help set next year's course for
your club. Come early to enjoy the beach and picnic. Or go for
a short hike then be back in time for the meeting. Your vote
is important! Call Grant at 674-1459 if any issues to be brought
up need advanced planning.

PU'U KA'AUMAKUA
(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)
Pu'u Ka'aumakua (family deity hill) is the finest panorama on
O'ahu according to HTM legend Al Miller. At 2,681 ft, the peak
towers high above Waikane Valley. We will get to it via a pleasant
valley stroll, a breathtaking climb to the crest of the Ko'olau
Range and a half mile stretch along the fabled Ko'olau Summit
Trail. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.
Apr 15 Sat 8AM WILIWILINUI
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Wai'alae)
This is an easy going route to the Ko'olau summit above Wai'alae
Iki. A novice dirt road at first then an intermediate short trail
to make the final ascent. Great views of the windward side and
east O'ahu are the reward. Novice hikers are encouraged to try
this one. Coordinator Joyce Tomlinson, ph 674-1459.
Apr 16 Sun 8AM KUOLANI-WAIANU
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Contour/Waiahole)
This is a fun hike through Waiahole Valley. The starting point
is on the east side of the valley which continues to the west
side. Along the way be sure to look up at the tall trees which
may have as many as nine birdsnest ferns on one tree. A contour
trail along the old ditch trail with an amazing water tunnel
that sends much needed water to the Leeward side of the island.
Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.
Apr 21 Fri Special Meeting
Time ULUPA'U HEAD
(1/2 Mi/Novice/Shoreline/Mokapu)
Good Friday's the best day to do this pilgrimage to plumage as
we view the baby booby birds. Wear a hat as protection from the
dive bombing parents. Check with the coordinator to confirm rendezvous
time and place. Coordinator Donna Davis-Brown, ph 422-7830.
Apr 22 Sat 5 PM -- HTMC 90th
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION / KUPUNA NIGHT
5 pm - Barbeque / Potluck
6 pm - Cake and Ice Cream
7 pm - Hiking Stories By Kupuna
Come on over to the clubhouse to celebrate HTMC's 90th birthday!
We will be paying special tribute to our kupuna--HTMC members
who are 60 years or older and who have been members for 10 years
or more. Everyone (except kupuna) should bring something to barbeque
or a potluck dish. As the highlight of the evening, our kupuna
will reminisce treasured memories of Hawaii's trails, recount
amazing hiking adventures, and retell daring climbing feats to
conquer previously unscaled mountain peaks--some of which have
yet to be repeated 'til this very day. Call Lynn Agena at 696-5740
to tell us what your contribution to the cookout will be.
Apr 23 Sun 8AM HALAWA RIDGE
(14 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Halawa)
The route starts with a valley stroll, follows with a stiff climb,
and finishes with a long in-and-out contour. The hike seems endless,
but a strong, steady pace will get you to the top and back before
dinner. Coordinator Arnold Fujioka, ph 625-9431.
Apr 29 Sat 8AM WAIMANO TUNNELS
(5 Mi/Intermediate/ContourValley/Pearl City)
Try this new variation on an old favorite. We descend into Waimano
Valley and then contour along the ditch trail. The highlight
is a scramble through two tunnels, one long and straight, the
other, short and twisting. Bring a flashlight and a hard head.Coordinator
Stuart Ball, ph 247-5380.
Apr 30 Sun 8AM MANANA
(12 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pacific Palisades)
In the beginning half of the trail you share the wide-as-an-avenue
path with a number of cyclists. But after the helipad, their
appearances are nil. The trail becomes a single lane with roped-sections
for climbing, very muddy root-laden paths, ending with gusting
winds in your face at the summit...a hiker's hike. Coordinator
Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.
May 6 Sat 7:30AM MEMBERS ONLY
TOUR DE HALAWA SUPER HIKE
HIKE RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15; PARTICIPANTS SCREENED
AND APPROVED BY THE HIKE COORDINATOR
(15 miles/Advanced/Ridge/Aiea-Halawa)
Few people know there are stairs on the ridge on the other side
of Ha'iku Valley. We'll get to tramp on this rarely visited metal
walkway during this long, rugged trek that will have us begin
in Halawa Valley, climb a spur to Aiea Ridge, cross along the
Ko'olau summit, and descend Halawa Ridge back to our start point.
Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 455-0414.
May 7 Sun 8AM KOLOA GULCH
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/La'ie)
Hazards: slippery rocks, flash flood, rockfall
We hike up a ridge first then drop down to Koloa Stream where
we begin our 24(?) stream crossings as we follow her waters upstream.
The lunch spot is a small pool below a larger waterfall. For
those who dare, drop your packs, a short swim, and a minor climb
bring you up close and personal to the waterfall and plunge pool.
Coordinator John Hoover, ph 528-1206.
May 13 Sat 8AM ULUPAINA
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Graded/Ridge/Kahalu'u)
This woodsy Windward hike provides some good coastal views, following
your huffing and puffing up a few hills. Listen for the temple
gong in the Byodo-in temple far below you. Who takes the high
road, who takes the low road? There are two choices to circumnavigate
the head of the valley. Coordinator Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.
May 14 Sun 8AM MOANALUA
(10 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Moanalua)
A valley hike on a shaded dirt road leads us to a trail through
the left valley. Easy stroll until the final ascent to the summit
of Ha'iku Valley. Sweeping views of Ha'iku Valley and Kane'ohe
Bay. Coordinators Kim & Judy Roy, ph 988-5372.
May 21 Sun 8AM MALAEKAHANA
STREAM
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Valley/La'ie)
A myriad of footpaths consisting of long, hot, dusty and sometimes
tree-shaded jeep roads; taunting you up slope to a forested area
of guava stands laden with ripening globules of strawberry and
yellow fruits. And with a quickened pace, you glide effortlessly
down to the refreshing and shimmering stream for a long, cool
dip. Coordinator Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.
May 27 Sat - May 29 Mon KO'OLAU
SUMMIT BACKPACK
(MEMBERS ONLY, RESERVATIONS REQUIRED, LIMIT OF 15)
(20 Mi/Masochist/Ridge/Ko'olau)
We did this last August and since the trip went so well, we decided
to do it again. Yes, there's mud aplenty, an overgrown trail,
and no shortage of pua'a, but what better chance to hike the
mythical Ko'olau Summit Trail? Starting at Pupukea, we'll overnight
at Kawailoa and Poamoho and then exit on day three on California
Avenue in Wahiawa.
Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 455-0414.
May 28 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY
PU'U O KILA
(6 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)
And you thought the broad pleasant promise of Kahana Valley offered
only leisurely streamside rambles. Ha! Will you be surprised!
This gem runs the gamut from novice to advanced, and the pinnacle
of our success requires a sure foot and a steady eye on the practically
vertical ridge. Go as far as you want, but know that we will
keep track of those who go all the way. Coordinator Ralph Valentino,
ph 595-6363.
Jun 3 Sat 8AM MEMBERS ONLY
KANEHOA HAPAPA
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15
(9 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge-Contour/Kunia)
This ambitious and rewarding trek leads us along the spine of
the Wai'anae Mountains. Due to the potential adverse effect of
large numbers of hikers on the fragile ecosystems in the area,
the group size is limited. Advance reservations with the coordinator
are required. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 627-1693.
Jun 3 Sat 5:30 PM, BARBEQUE
/ SLIDE SHOW - CONTINENTAL DIVIDE
5:30 pm - Barbeque / Potluck
7:30 pm - Slide Show - Continental Divide
Join your hiking friends in a cookout under the hau arbor at
the clubhouse. As the highlight of the evening Stuart Ball and
Grant Oka will share their backpacking adventures in Montana
along the Continental Divide at Glacier National Park and Bob
Marshall Wilderness. Please call Lynn Agena at 696-5740 to tell
us what food you'll be bringing to the event.
Jun 4 Sun 8AM KULEPEAMOA RIDGE
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Niu Valley)
A truly breath taking loop hike! The steep ascent leaves you
gasping for breath, walking the narrow ridge makes you hold your
breath, and the views from the summit take your breath away...but
don't breathe a sigh of relief until you finish the steep descent,
which will have you grabbing for trees like a modern Tarzan!
ah-AA-ahhh! Coordinator Mike Algiers, ph 422-1048.
Jun 11 Sun 8AM SCHOFIELD-WAIKANE
(9 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Wahiawa)
Army engineers built this contoured route in the 1920s. The trail
has seen better days, but it remains the premier route to the
central Ko'olau summit. Below the trail are pocket gulches with
magnificent 'ohi'a trees and native birds. Coordinators Wil Kawano,
ph 373-1492 and Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596.
Jun 17 Sat 8AM KAUKONAHUA
SUPERFLOAT
(8 Mi(1.5 by water)/Intermediate/Ridge Valley/Wahiawa)
Don your tabbies or sneakers, hike to the stream, and climb aboard
your raft, tube or float. Drift downstream through uncharted
waters and exit via Wahiawa Hills. Coordinators Larry Oswald
and Kris Corliss ph 638-7268.
Jun 18 Sun 8AM MAKIKI TANTALIZER
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Tantalus)
Near the urban jungle, this trail jumble won't make you grumble.
Don't stumble, (rocks will crumble) you'll take a tumble (make
you humble) (writer's apologies mumbled). This pleasant woodsy
jaunt requires attention to the coordinator's directions and
trail markings for successful completion. Coordinator Sandy Klein,
ph 235-8330.
Jun 25 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY
PU'U 'OHULEHULE
(8 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Kahana)
It held two Danish women hostage for eight days and made heroes
of three HTM trailclearers. Mount 'Ohulehule is the craggy peak
that dominates the windward coast from Kahalu'u to Punalu'u.
It stands alone, being only loosely connected to the Ko'olau
summit ridge. Radiating from its slopes are four undeveloped
valleys - Kahana, Ka'a'awa, Hakipu'u, and Waikane. Perhaps Jim,
one of the heroes, will give you his autograph if you ask nicely.Coordinator
Jim Pushaw, ph 487-6798.
Jul 1 Sat 8AM LIKEKE
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Hillside/Kane'ohe)
The trail maintenance crew was successful in rerouting the access
trail to avoid walking along Likelike Hwy to Wilson Tunnel. The
access trail now slants its way to Likeke Trail. A contour trail
following the base of the Ko'olau leads us to the Pali Falls.
After lunch at the falls, we continue on the trail to the Pali
golf course road returning to Ho'omaluhia Park via the east gate
of the park. Coordinator Joe Bussen, ph 262-5506.
Jul 2 Sat 8AM KAHANA VALLEY
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Kahana)
This lush windward valley fulfills its promise of green forests,
rambling trails and sparkling streams. Follow the directions
and the ribbons so it doesn't fulfill a promise of lost hikers!
Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845.
