(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Hawai'i Kai)
Hazards: steep drop offs, narrow sections. All HTMCer's need
to start the new year and the new millenium with a good climb
followed by a walk on the narrow crumbly rim. Live long and prosper.
Coordinator Grant Oka, ph 674-1459.
Jan 2 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY
KALENA
(7 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Schofield)
A very perilous hike with narrow rock dikes, steep dropoffs,
craggy spires, abounding with blackberry thickets as you near
the summit. But her voluptuous views make up for these risks.
Coordinator Dave Sanford, ph 488-4419.
Jan 9 Sun 8AM KUAOKALA RESERVATIONS
REQUIRED - LIMIT OF 30
(5 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha)
Here a chukar, there a chukar, everywhere a chukar screeching
their taunting chuckle as you hike this beautiful ridge trail
edging Makua Valley with her light green rolling hills with panoramic
views of the rolling surf and white sandy beaches from Makaha
to Ka'ena Point. Coordinator Jim Pushaw, ph 487-6798.
Jan 15 Sat 8AM MAKAPU'U POINT
(2 Mi/Novice/Hillside/Makapu'u)
It's whale watching time again. The observation platform is the
perfect whale sighting point. A rather short hike with spectacular
views, on a clear day you can see Moloka'i, Lana'i and the West
Maui mountains. A blow hole and the tide pools are on the east
side of the paved road. Coordinator Zon Owen, ph 597-8493.
Jan 16 Sun 8AM MEMBERS ONLY
KAMAILE'UNU

NIHOA GULCH
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15
(6 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Mokule'ia)
Steve promises a new and exciting route on this interesting and
varied hike. We'll see how he manages to top the excitement provided
by the toehold/fingerhold rock scramble of last year's route!
Crystal Canyon beckons with mystery and intrigue and fantastic
views await the climber at the top of the ascent. Coordinator
Steve Poor, ph 638-8387.
Jan 30 Sun 8AM KAUNALA
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Paumalu)
Warm up on Jeep road and then stroll along a pleasant shady (sometimes
muddy) contour trail. Dirt bikers like this path, too, so watch
out for the ruts. For the botanically inclined, there are some
uncommon natives here. Coordinator John Hall, ph 377-5442.
Feb 5 Sat 8AM KAWA'EWA'E
(3 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kane'ohe)
We start in the pleasant Friendship Gardens in residential Kane'ohe
with an easy hillside stroll, but wouldn't you know it, in true
HTMC style, the next minute we're scrambling up this bare dirt
ridge and then we're hanging on for dear life dangling from these
FLIMSY ROPES!!! Just kidding - it's not quite as bad as that.
The views are great and provide a different perspective on Kane'ohe
and the Bay. Coordinator Steve Brown, ph 247-8845
Feb 5 Sat 5PM, Clubhouse BARBEQUE
/ SLIDE SHOW
5 pm - Barbeque / Potluck
7 pm - Slide Show Hawaiian Plants by Kost Pankiwskyj
Spend a relaxing afternoon sunbathing on Waimanalo beach, lounging
at the clubhouse and barbequing your favorite recipes over a
smoky kiawe fire. As the highlight of the evening, Kost Pankiwskyj
will provide a slide show of Hawaiian plants one may encounter
on the trail. Don't miss this great opportunity to socialize
with your hiking buddies and to learn fascinating tidbits about
the unique flora of Hawaiçi. Please call Lynn Agena at
696-5740 to tell us what you'll be bringing to the potluck

PU'U KEAHI A KAHOE
(11 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Moanalua)
What starts as a pleasant stroll up a shady road, will soon have
you climbing walls... the valley walls to the Ko'olau summit!
It's a mystery which trail we take to the top, since there are
three! All are steep! A traverse along the summit affords spectacular
views... also spectacular drop-offs, so be careful! You may even
get a peek down the "stairs" before you start back.
The rest is all downhill!!! Coordinator Ken Suzuki, ph 845-4691.
Feb 13 Sun 8AM MANANA DITCH
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Ridge/Pacific Palisades)
We'll take the original route this time so be prepared for several
steep ups and downs. The reward for all this crosscountry work
is a wide, level path along an abandoned irrigation ditch. The
tail end of the trail is exceedingly pleasant. Coordinator Stuart
Ball, ph 247-5380.
Feb 19-21 Sat-Mon KUAOKALA
CAMPOUT
(17Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Makaha)
Got tent? Have you hugged a wire fence today? Do you know where
your HTMC members are today? We've got the answers and more if
you join us for sun-filled days exploring trails; starry, starry
nites; red sails in the sunset; Paka's spine-tingling pua'a tales;
Oka's oven-baked delites; Kenji, the Starmeister; Ralph's liquid
aperitifs and Moon's pie iron hot desserts! Coordinators Carole
Moon, ph 596-4864 and Ralph Valentino, ph 595-6363.
Feb 20 Sun 8AM WAIMANO
(14 Mi/Advanced/Contour/Pearl City)
This trail doesn't go on forever, it just SEEMS that way. But
it's wide and graded, which lulls you into steadily continuing
on, mile after mile. When you finally get to the summit, you
may think that you've traveled far enough to see the Atlantic,
but that's only Kahalu'u you see below (clouds permitting). Sorry,
there are no short cuts on the way back! Coordinator Mike Algiers,
ph 422-1048.

KAUA
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kunia)
Our route passes through areas with sensitive ecosystems easily
damaged by large groups of people, hence our restriction to 15
participants. Be one of the lucky few to visit this special spot
on O'ahu. The climb is a bit stiff - after all, our goal is the
3rd highest peak on the island. The views from atop the Wai'anae
Summit are truly breathtaking. Coordinator Phil Booth, ph 627-1693.
Feb 27 Sun 8AM LANIPO
(7 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Kaimuki)
Steep ascent, slippery exposed, serious climbing, severely eroded,
stiff climb are phrases taken from Stuart Ball's description
of this hike in his book "The Hiker's Guide to O'ahu."
He goes on to say the spectacular views farther in are well worth
the extra effort. Coordinators Jay Feldman, ph 262-9596 and Wil
Kawano, ph 373-1492.
Mar 4 Sat 8AM PU'U O HULU
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Ma'ili)
If Kamaile'unu and Heleakala intimidate you, give this hike a
try. A good introduction to Wai'anae Coast hiking, dry rocky
Pu'u O Hulu Kai and Uka are the twin peaks on the ridge separating
Nanakuli from Ma'ili and feature outstanding panoramic views
of Lualualei Valley, the Wai'anae Range, and the Leeward Coast.
Coordinator Fred Dodge, ph 696-4677.
Mar 5 Sun 8AM KAIPAPA'U GULCH
(8 Mi/Intermediate/Valley-Stream/Hau'ula)
A long way to go just for a swim but getting there is most of
the fun. We criss-cross the slippery Kaipapa'u stream many times
to get to the scenic waterfall and plunge pool. Expect mud, mosquitoes,
slippery rocks, possible flash flood hazard, possible rock fall
hazard, native rain forest plants and pleasant hiking companions
to make this a superb stream hike. Coordinator Grant Oka, ph
674-1459.

PUPUKEA - LA'IE SUMMIT
RESERVATIONS REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 25
(15 Mi/Advanced/Ridge/Pupukea)
This hike follows the Ko'olau Summit ridge through some wild
and woolly country. The trail section has been reopened but don't
expect a sidewalk. Try not to miss the La'ie junction, or you
could end up in Kipapa - two days later. Coordinators Kris Corliss
and Larry Oswald, ph 638-7268.

KULI'OU'OU WATERFALL TO MANOA MIDDLE SUPER HIKE RESERVATIONS
REQUIRED: LIMIT OF 15; PARTICIPANTS SCREENED AND APPROVED BY
THE HIKE COORDINATOR
(10 miles/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Eastern Koolaus)
For those with big appetites, the first HTMC Super Hike of the
21st century will fit the bill nicely. Starting in Kuliouou Valley,
the planned menu includes a rope-assisted climb as an appetizer,
a smorgasbord of Ko'olau summit pu'us as the main course, and
a descent of a rarely essayed ridge in Manoa Valley as dessert.
First time super hikers are especially welcome. Donning formal
wear and tipping the maitre d' are optional.
Coordinator Dayle Turner, ph 455-0414.
Mar 19 Sun 8AM WAHIAWA HILLS
(6 Mi/Intermediate/Ridge/Valley/Wahiawa)
Think wave when you hike this loop trail and go with the flow
of her numerous undulating ridges. At her snug harbor we rest
and relax at a stream for a swim and later continue riding the
crest and ridges of her hills until she finally ebbs. Coordinator
Steve Becker, ph 678-0841.
Mar 26 Sun 8AM MT. OLYMPUS
(6 Mi/ Intermediate/Ridge/St. Louis Hts.)
We start in the cool breath of the towering pines of Wa'ahila
State Park. We'll breathe deeply as the trail is a rollercoster
of ups and downs as we ascend toward the Ko'olau summit. After
the Kolowalu Trail junction, the trail narrows and the ascent
steepens. The breathless ascent rewards the stalwart hiker with
breathtaking views of Maunawili Valley, the windward coast, and
peeks into the hidden crater, Ka'au.
Coordinators Judy & Kim Roy, ph 988-5372.
Apr 1 Sat 8AM LUA'ALAEA
(4 Mi/Intermediate/Valley/Manoa)
Join us and take the off ramp from the Manoa Falls freeway to
this lush and secluded waterfall visited by few, except us and
the pigs. Watch for the native plants and be careful not to get
stepped on by the mule's foot ferns. A bit of an uphill climb
is all the admission that's required to pay for the privilege
of your sojourn at this pristine spot. Coordinator Joe Bussen,
ph 262-5506.
Apr 2 Sun 2PM ANNUAL MEETING
(0.1 Mi/Novice/Clubhouse/Waimanalo)
Come on down to Waimanalo and help set next year's course for
your club. Come early to enjoy the beach and picnic. Or go for
a short hike then be back in time for the meeting. Your vote
is important! Call Grant at 674-1459 if any issues to be brought
up need advanced planning.

PU'U KA'AUMAKUA
(11 Mi/Advanced/Valley-Ridge/Waikane)
Pu'u Ka'aumakua (family deity hill) is the finest panorama on
O'ahu according to HTM legend Al Miller. At 2,681 ft, the peak
towers high above Waikane Valley. We will get to it via a pleasant
valley stroll, a breathtaking climb to the crest of the Ko'olau
Range and a half mile stretch along the fabled Ko'olau Summit
Trail. Coordinator Patrick Rorie, ph 676-2748.
