| ANNUAL MEETING CHANGE
Grant Oka, President | Please note that the annual meeting has been changed to Sunday April 5, 2PM. See you there! |
| RAY BAKER PHOTOGRAPHS
Joyce Tomlinson | Thelma Grieg has decided to sell reproductions of her Ray Baker photographs at this year's HTMC Annual Meeting. These are the mounted photos which were shown at her recent Clubhouse program. The proceeds from this sale are to be donated to the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club. Here is your chance to not only purchase a bit of Hawaiiana but to also help the Club with some much needed funds! The photos will sell for $30 and up. |
| CLUBHOUSE SUGGESTIONS
Jay & Robb | All club members are invited to make suggestions about how to improve clubhouse services, appearance, facilities, etc. In fact if you have any ideas at all about how to make the clubhouse and grounds more enjoyable for the membership, please let us know. Let your imagination flow. Financial constraints may influence final decisions, but we promise a careful study of every suggestion submitted. Let your imagination flow! |
| NEIGHBOR ISLAND NEWS
Richard McMahon | Club members who enjoy hiking Haleakala Crater will be glad to hear that the Lau'ulu Trail behind the Paliku Cabin is alive and well. Dropped from most maps years ago, and unmaintained since, use of the trail had been discouraged by park authorities. Last summer, however, the park did major work on the trail, and placed it on the new park brochure.
Some friends and I hiked the Lau'ulu in January and found it in very good condition. The trail begins just behind the lua at Paliku Cabin, ascends gradually to Kalapawili Ridge, and ends on the summit of Lau'ulu. Views along the way and from the top are spectacular, including the interior of the crater, a complete panorama of Kipahulu Valley, the Kaupo Gap all the way to the shoreline, and Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai on the Big Island. |
| HOW DO I MAKE USE OF THE CLUBHOUSE?
Grant Oka, President | The HTMC Clubhouse is our rustic pride and joy. Its purpose is for HTMC members' rest, relaxation and socializing.
How does a member make arrangements to use the clubhouse? You could just drop by to enjoy the beach or the hau arbor for a picnic or barbecue. There is an outside shower with hot water. If you call ahead, one of the caretakers, Robb, or Don, can provide the door combination lock numbers. Then your options could include indoor things like reading, napping, or cooking something to eat. For large groups, call well in advance as the Board of Directors may have to approve these reservations. Members have used the Clubhouse facility for birthdays, weddings, mini-vacations, or meetings. Starting April 98: Clubhouse use fees for Guests will be raised from $5 to $10 for overnight stays ($2 to $5 for children) and from $1 to $2 for day use ($0.50 to $1 for children). Clubhouse use fees for Members will remain unchanged.
Remember, the caretakers are volunteers who provide security by living at the clubhouse and they also do minor maintenance but they are not there to clean up after groups or individuals. Please adhere to Clubhouse Rules and leave the Clubhouse in better shape than before. |
| HTMC CLUBHOUSE COMMITTEE WISH LIST | The HTMC Clubhouse Committee is putting out its donation request list. Please call the Clubhouse at 259-5443 and inform Robb, or Don if you are willing to donate any of these items. Remember, all donations must be approved by the Board of Directors. | LETTER FROM BILL CARRICO TO HTMC | The day before Valentine's Day....
Aloha & Howdy from the Garden Island! Yes, it's been cold - but, it certainly is beautiful and serene (except for the chaos of Bob & Marianne moving & unpacking & commuting weekly to Oahu at different times. The cat & I are the more permanent residents although the ducks, chickens, cows, spiders & fish would probably refute that claim. I haven't yet been in the ocean or the mountains but have accomplished a great deal in setting up my new nest. It seems I'm continuing much of the caretaking duties here with an orchard, stream, two story house, etc, to keep up. Oranges, grapefruit, papaya, star fruit, breadfruit, bananas & avocados are falling off the trees & mango, lychee, coffee, macadamia nuts are to come later. We are behind the Sleeping Giant in a small picket of houses & a park with tennis courts across the stream. No volley ball yet but I'm sure I'll find something when I get out & away more. Bob Hurlbut was here yesterday & took me for a ride to Kilauea area. Big Surf, waterfalls, magnificent views everywhere. A woman next door has taken me to Poipu area for sunset & Lydgate Park for moonrise - along with champagne, smoked salmon, caviar, chips & dip, cheese etc, etc & several friends. Kauai residents know how to appreciate their life & space. Wheeeeee!!! I've bicycled into Kapaa twice but the ride back up the hill with 40 lbs. of groceries on my back is a little much so I think I'll find me a moped. Bob & Marianne have 2 cars here & I'm welcome to use them but, I prefer my more minimalist lifestyle (they also have another car & share a house in Palolo on Oahu). And, they have way too much stuff here and not enough time to keep up with jobs or home.
The cat, who spent the 1st 6 months of life in an 18th floor condo, has become an outside cat but at 1st had an episode of chasing off a trespassing cat & 4 hours later I went looking for him. He was across the stream, up a tangle of hau, surrounded by ducks, chickens, cows, spiders & down the stream and marsh area. It took me another hour to get to him for the rescue. We have now bonded & he sleeps with me.
[the rest of Bill's letter is concerning a telephone company refund check he received and sent to HTMC] Best wishes to you & the HTMC'ers & walk in beauty,
Bill |
