Below is a list of common questions that you may have about the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club. If you have any questions or concerns that aren’t addressed here, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
What is the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club?
HTMC is a community-based, volunteer hiking club based on Oahu. We have been hiking and maintaining trails since 1910.
How can I find out about upcoming hikes?
Visit our Hike Schedule. Hikes are scheduled every Sunday and some Saturdays.
Can I hike with HTMC?
Yes! You are very welcome to join us on any hike unless it is marked “MEMBERS ONLY”. We request a $3.00 donation from non-members.
How can I find out more about the hike?
Click on the hike for a short description. For more detailed information, you can contact the coordinator of that particular hike. More generally, you can search online or purchase a hiking book.
Where do I meet to go on a hike?
A meeting spot will be indicated with each hike’s date/time, check the calendar for more info or contact the hike coordinator if no info is available yet. We no longer meet at ‘Iolani Palace.
I have never hiked in the Hawaiian Islands before. How should I choose a hike?
Our hikes are rated as “Novice”, “Intermediate” and “Advanced”. Start with Novice trails, which are suitable to anyone in good physical shape. Then progress to Intermediate hikes, which are more physically demanding and may have some hazardous sections. When you feel you may be ready to tackle Advanced hikes, contact the hike coordinator to get more information on the trail. Remember, you are responsible for your own safety.
What should I wear on a hike?
Comfortable hiking boots or sturdy shoes, long pants (shorts only if you are willing to endure scratches and mosquito bites), a non-cotton shirt and sun hat. Pack a rain/wind jacket and warm clothes because Hawaii weather constantly changes, especially in the mountains.
What should I bring on a hike?
Some key items are two or three liters of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, small first aid kit… and a daypack to carry everything. You may also wish to bring a camera, binoculars, cell phone, hiking pole and emergency gear.
How long is the hike?
Most Sunday hikes take the entire day. A typical ending time is 3 or 4 p.m. Depending on the trailhead location, it may take an additional hour to return to the city. Saturday hikes are typically shorter, often ending by 1 or 2 pm.
I have questions about a scheduled hike. Who should I ask?
Please contact the hike coordinator. Coordinator contact information is listed in the hike coordinator page.
